Extend an expiring myki
If your myki is nearing its expiry day, scan it before tapping on to travel.
myki cards expire after a certain amount of time. If you've received a notification telling you your myki is expiring, you may be able to extend it.
You can replace a Youth myki, but you can't extend it.
Expiry date extension
If eligible, a scanned myki is immediately extended. The new expiry date is an additional two years from the original expiry date.
How to scan your myki
In person:
Scan your myki by presenting it to a myki machine
- This is the large machine at a train station or at some accessible tram stops and bus interchanges)
- Place your myki on the machine, and wait for the card details to load. You can now remove the myki.
Or present your myki for scanning:
- using the latest version of the PTV App (NFC-enabled phones only)
- at a staffed train station
- at a myki retailer
- at the PTV Hub in Southern Cross Station (on the concourse near the corner of Spencer Street and Collins Street)
- Monday to Friday: 7.30am to 6.30pm
- Weekends and public holidays: 9am to 5pm
- Closed: Christmas Day
Using the PTV App:
- Download or check you are using the latest version of the PTV App.
- Open the PTV App. Go to the myki menu and tap ‘Scan myki - check balance’.
- Follow the prompts to scan your myki smartcard using your phone (make sure NFC is turned on in your phone settings)
If you have an active myki Pass on your myki smartcard, please make sure you apply the expiry extension before your myki expires.
Scanning a myki is different from tapping on. You cannot tap on to extend your myki on trains, trams, or buses. You can only scan at the locations/methods listed above. Make sure you scan before you intend to tap on to travel.
Sometimes, you might need to scan your myki for a different reason, such as topping up your myki or checking the balance. Eligible mykis will automatically extend their expiry date during the top up process on the devices above.
Replace expiring/expired myki not eligible for extension and transfer balance to new myki
Some mykis are not eligible for an expiry date extension, and need to be replaced:
- myki that expired more than 90 days ago
- International student myki
- Free travel passes
- DVA Pensioner fare type myki and War Veteran/War Widow myki
- Most other special Concession myki types
- Mobile myki. For more information, see Mobile myki FAQs
Replace your myki for free and have your balance transferred onto the new myki at any ticket window or PTV Hub.
If you’re no longer eligible for a Concession myki, you should buy a new Full Fare myki instead and request a refund for any positive balance. You’re required to carry proof of concession eligibility when you travel.
