Tap on and off with myki

Ensure you get the lowest fare, charged the same day you travel.

Get same-day, lowest fares

Tap on every time to ensure you get the lowest fare, charged the same day you travel.

Tap on at the start of your trip, and tap off at the end when you travel on:

  • a train (including V/Line)
  • any bus that accepts myki
  • a tram trip that begins and ends in Zone 2.

Tap on when you take a tram trip that starts and ends in Zone 1. You don’t need to tap off.

More ways to tap and go

Follow these steps to trial full-fare contactless payments this March.

Using the Free Tram Zone [PDF]? Don’t tap on or off if your tram trip begins and ends within the Free Tram Zone.

If you don’t use your myki correctly, you won’t have a valid ticket for your trip and may be fined

An Auto Top Up helps ensure you can always pay for your fare.

If you don’t tap off

If you don’t tap off on a train, bus, or a tram trip covering Zone 1 and 2:

  • It may take us longer to process your fare. You may not be charged on the same day you travelled.
  • We charge you a default fare if you don’t tap off. This may not be the lowest fare for your trip. View default fares for metropolitan train, tram and bus fares.

Changing transport services

Tap on when you change your mode of transport (for example, from a train to a tram).

Use your myki if you need to go through a myki barrier gate. Sometimes, you might need to do this when you’re changing trains.

Using underground connections between stations

You can walk between these stations using underground connections to complete your journey:

  • Flinders Street Station and Town Hall Station
  • Melbourne Central Station and State Library Station.

If you're changing trains between these stations, you don't need to tap on or off.

If you're walking through without catching a train, tap on your myki at the gates. Tap off within 15 minutes and you won't be charged.

How to ‘tap’ your myki against a reader

  1. Tap your physical myki to the centre of the myki reader. If you are using a mobile myki, wake up your phone and hold it about 1 cm above the reader.
  2. Hold still and listen for the beep.
  3. A green light will show on the reader (or your phone screen) when you’ve tapped on or off.

Change of mind

You may tap on at a train station, and then change your mind. If you tap off within 15 minutes at the same train station, you won’t be charged.

You can't change your mind if you tap on a tram or bus. You'll be charged for the trip, even if you tap off within 15 minutes of tapping on.

Other ticket types

myki is used on most public transport in Victoria, but not all. View more information on paper tickets for V/Line and other regional services.
