How to use public transport in Melbourne and Victoria
Here's what you need to know to get around on public transport.
Get set up to pay
You can pay with contactless payment or myki, Victoria's public transport smart card.
myki
Pay using a physical myki card or via Mobile myki (Android only) if you don't want to use your bank card.
Support: Full fare and concession

- V/Line trains (some lines)

Contactless
Pay as you go by tapping your Mastercard or Visa, smartphone or smartwatch.

V/Line coaches, used for regional Victoria travel, don't use myki or contactless. You'll need a paper ticket or eTicket.

Victoria's public transport network includes trains, trams and buses in Melbourne, and trains, coaches and buses in regional areas.

Tap on every trip, except in the Free Tram Zone
Tap on with your myki or contactless payment when you board. The only exception is the Free Tram Zone, where you don't tap on or off at all. Travel there is free.
Do you need to tap off? It depends on what you're travelling on:

Not all V/Line lines have myki and contactless yet. On V/Line trains where myki and contactless is not yet enabled, you may need to buy a paper ticket or eTicket.
What you'll pay
Right now: half-price travel
Public transport in Victoria is half price until 1 January 2027. If you are a concession traveller, this includes you. To access half price fares simply tap on as usual.
Standard fares (effective 1 January 2027)
No matter how far you travel in Melbourne or regional Victoria, you won't pay more than the daily fare cap.

Travelling in regional Victoria
When you're travelling in regional Victoria, the daily fare cap means you won't pay more than one set price a day on public transport. The daily fare cap is even lower on weekends.
myki and contactless are rolling out across regional Victoria. You can travel with myki or contactless on some V/Line trains. Check which V/Line lines have myki and contactless.
If a V/Line route is not yet myki and contactless enabled, you’ll need a paper ticket or eTicket instead.
V/Line coaches always need a paper ticket or eTicket.
