Phillip Island Road corridor planning

Phillip Island and San Remo are premier tourist destinations in Victoria. To keep the local community and visitors moving we have delivered upgrades along Phillip Island Road and planned for future upgrades.

Overview

Phillip Island attracts more than 1.8 million visitors each year, a figure which could reach up to 3.5 million people a year by 2035.

Phillip Island Road is the only road link between Phillip Island and the mainland and carries on average between 10,000 to 15,000 vehicles a day. Improvements to the road network are crucial to the island's future and tourism.

We have engaged with the Phillip Island and surrounding community on upgrades to Phillip Island Road.

Congestion, accessibility and safety were issues of concern, particularly during peak visitor periods. Community feedback and our technical investigations guided us in developing plans and delivering upgrades.

Long-term planning for upgrades to the road network is crucial to Philip Island’s liveability, future needs and tourism.

What we’ve done so far

We have delivered two major intersection upgrades on the Phillip Island Road.

We completed an $8.75 million dual-lane roundabout to replace the intersection at Back Beach Road near Sunset Strip, and a $10.48 million dual-lane roundabout at the intersection of Woolamai Beach Road and Phillip Island Road at Cape Woolamai.

The two intersection upgrades were developed as part of a $3.2 million investment by the Victorian government to investigate infrastructure improvements on Phillip Island Road.

As part of this project, we also developed proposed plans for improvements to sections of Phillip Island Road in San Remo and Newhaven.

You can view our proposed plans for these upgrades in San Remo and Newhaven on the following pages:

Next Steps

San Remo and Newhaven remain key priorities, and we are reviewing our designs for both areas.

While these upgrades are currently unfunded, we remain committed to the Phillip Island Road corridor project.

We continue to engage regularly with Bass Coast Shire Council and key stakeholders to address the region’s needs.

We will also monitor the area, refine our proposed designs, explore future funding opportunities, and keep the community informed of any progress or updates.
