San Remo bridge rehabilitation project
Underway
The San Remo Bridge has been exposed to marine conditions, tides and weather for many years. These conditions can cause concrete cracking and steel corrosion, particularly around the bridge piers.
The rehabilitation works will:
- maintain the bridge at its current capacity, providing continued functionality and reliability
- restore its service life, structural integrity and usability
- improve long-term durability to ensure safe passage for vehicles and pedestrians.
What we’re doing
From 29 April 2026, we’ll begin setting up site compounds and storage areas in San Remo and Newhaven. These will be in place until we complete the works.
Construction on the bridge is expected to start in mid-2026 and be complete by mid-2028. We’ll start by installing scaffolding on the underside of the bridge to provide our crews with access to the bridge’s beams and piers.
We will then begin works on the bridge, which involves:
- Reinforcing the bridge beams by installing steel tendons
- Installing concrete jackets around each of the 36 bridge piers to protect them from further corrosion
- Repairing the existing concrete where damaged.

We’ll also use the Newhaven boat ramp and the San Remo jetty to transfer materials to and from our work sites on the bridge.
What to expect
While we set up our site compounds, you will notice:
- Minor lane closures and disruptions to traffic as we bring materials in to build our site compounds
- Fencing around site compounds and storage areas
- Workers moving between the San Remo bridge and our site compounds
- Low-level noise as we build our site sheds and bring equipment to site
- Some workers’ vehicles parked on local streets – we’ll advise workers where to park to minimise the impact on the community.
Throughout construction, the bridge will remain open to traffic and pedestrians. When required, lane closures or pedestrian path closures will occur at night, with delays of up to five minutes. There will be no impacts on bus stops, public transport services or pedestrian connections. Access for marine vessels under the bridge will remain available under one of the three middle spans at all times.
How we’re managing environmental impacts
We understand how important and significant the local environment is that we’re working in. As part of our planning, we’ve undertaken both marine and terrestrial ecology assessments to avoid potential impacts to the environment and marine life are mitigated.
We’re working closely with regulators, including the Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action, Parks Victoria and Bass Coast Shire Council to minimise impacts on the marine environment and wildlife, particularly the Western Port Ramsar site and annual migration of the Short-tailed Shearwater.
