Phillip Island Road, San Remo proposed upgrades

The Victorian Government committed $3.2 million for planning along Phillip Island Road. We consulted with the community and developed plans to improve safety, traffic flow and access through Phillip Island Road in San Remo.
Project status:

Planned

Overview

In 2015 and 2016, we engaged with the San Remo community on plans to upgrade the Phillip Island Road intersections in San Remo.
This feedback, along with input from the wider community and our technical investigations, guided the development of these designs.

Details

These upgrades would improve road safety, access, and traffic flow in San Remo, they include:

  • installing a set of traffic lights at the intersections of Phillip Island Road and Back Beach Road, where new access onto Marine Parade would be created
  • widening the road for two new lanes, creating a total of four lanes between San Remo Parade and Bergin Grove, which would maintain good traffic flow through the Back Beach Road intersection
  • a centre median strip along Phillip Island Road from San Remo Parade to Bergin Grove to reduce the likelihood of head-on crashes
  • providing safer access at Bergin Grove with the removal of the right-turn onto Phillip Island Road, and
  • installing a new pedestrian crossing on Marine Parade for a safer connection to the bus stops.

Benefits

Benefits of these upgrades include:

  • better accessibility
  • improved traffic flow through San Remo and onto Phillip Island
  • improved access into San Remo and onto Phillip Island Road
  • improved intersection safety for those accessing Phillip Island Road from Back Beach Road, Marine Parade and Bergin Grove in San Remo, and
  • safer for pedestrians and cyclists.

Next steps

The upgrades aren’t currently funded for delivery. We continue to engage regularly with Bass Coast Shire Council and key stakeholders on this and other projects along the Phillip Island Road corridor.

We also continue to monitor the region, refine our proposed designs, and explore future funding opportunities.

We will keep the community informed of any progress or updates.
