Travelling with children on public transport
Children under the age of four don’t need a ticket and it’s free to take prams on public transport.
Children aged 5 to 18 can get a child concession. View more eligibility information in students and youth.
Travelling with children through myki gates
Children under 5 who do not have a myki card and are not being carried by an adult should use the wide access gates, which provide extra space and assistance.
When travelling with children who have a Child or Youth myki card, tap the adult card and then each child’s card (up to 10) before walking through the gate. The gates will stay open until everyone in your group has passed through.
Tips for travelling with prams
At the station or stop
- Hold on to your pram at all times and make sure your child is strapped in securely.
- Apply the pram’s parking brake to stop it rolling away.
- Stand with your pram behind the line on train platforms and tram stops, and away from the curb at bus stops.
- Make sure your pram is parked in line with the platform or footpath edge.
Boarding and exiting
- Enter the train, tram or bus with the pram in front of you and lift the front wheels over the gap.
- Board the train near the front carriage so that the driver can see you.
- Mind the gap and exit backwards when leaving the train, tram or bus.
- Watch for traffic if you’re exiting a tram on a roadside stop.
- You can ask the driver to use a ramp when getting on and off trains and low floor buses.
Using prams on public transport
Metropolitan trains
All metropolitan trains are accessible for passengers travelling with a pram. All metropolitan stations are accessible via ramp or lifts, except for Heyington Station.
If there is an emergency when you’re on the train, press the red emergency intercom button inside the train carriage to speak with the driver.
If you’re travelling with a pram, please use the wide myki gates where available. Station staff are available to help if you need extra time or assistance to move through the gates.
Each passenger, including children, needs to tap on and go through the gate individually. Make sure children go through the gates before the accompanying adult.
View pram safety information on the Metro Trains website.
Trams
High-floor trams have steps. Low-floor trams have wider doors and are lower to the ground with no steps.
You can find low-floor trams on all services on routes 11, 19, 96 and 109 – and for some trams on routes 5, 6, 16, 48, 58, 72 and 86.
View ‘animals and carry-on’ information on the Yarra Trams website.
Buses
Most local buses in Victoria are low-floor services, and some buses can be lowered by the driver so it’s closer to the kerb. If needed, the bus driver will also use a ramp to help passengers board the bus.
For more information, call 1800 800 007 or contact your local bus operator.
Regional trains and coaches
You can take prams and strollers on V/Line train services if there's room on board. On busy services, the conductor may ask you to fold up your pram and store it in the appropriate area. The conductor can help you with storing your pram.
