Public transport for the Melbourne Marathon: Saturday 10 and Sunday 11 October 2026 

Public transport for events

The Melbourne Marathon returns to the MCG precinct for a 2-day festival.

Public transport services will be running to and from the start line on Batman Avenue, outside the MCG Precinct on Saturday 10 and Sunday 11 October. 

Passengers, please note there will be service changes for trams and buses from 4am to 2pm due to the road closures for the Melbourne Marathon.

Metropolitan train

Saturday 10 October

Extra train services to arrive at Flinders Street and Richmond Stations between 5:25am to 5:55am to assist you in travelling to and from the start line on Batman Avenue, outside the MCG Precinct. 

Anzac Station will be opened earlier at 4:00am to support tram impacts on St Kilda Road. 

Sunday 11 October 

Extra train services to arrive at Flinders Street and Richmond Stations between 4:30am to 5:05am to assist you in travelling to and from the start line on Batman Avenue, outside the MCG Precinct. 

Anzac Station will be opened earlier at 4:00am to support Tram impacts on St Kilda Road. 

Metropolitan tram

Saturday 10 October

Extra tram services will commence arriving in the precinct between 5:15am and 5:30am then throughout the morning. Post event, extra services will operate from 11:00am to 12:30pm. 

Due to the road closures implemented to support the Melbourne Marathon, trams will be running altered routes, and the following service changes will apply from 4.30am to 11am. 

Swanston Street / St Kilda tram Routes 1, 3/3a, 5, 6, 16, 64, 67 & 72: 

  • No trams between Flinders Street and Anzac Station 4.30am until 11:00am. 

  • Tram replacement services on St Kilda Road via Metro Tunnel – Town Hall Station to Anzac Station​. 

  • Swanston Street shuttles to operate Stop 1 Melbourne University and stop 11 Collins St/Swanston St shunting at Flinders Lane from 4:30am to 11:00am. 

  • Route 1 trams operate between East Coburg and South Melbourne Beach diverting via Kings Way, William Street and La Trobe Street from first tram to 11:00am. 

  • Route 6 trams to operate in two sections between Stop 133 Moreland Station/Moreland Road (Moreland Terminus) and Stop 11 Collins Street/Swanston Street shunting at Flinders Lane from first tram to 11:00am. 

  • Routes 5, 16 and 72 trams will operate a shortened service between their respective southeast suburbs and Stop 20 ANZAC Station shunting at the Shrine of Remembrance from first tram to 11:00am. 

  • Routes 3, 64 and 67 trams will operate between the south east suburbs and Stop 7 Flagstaff Station diverting via Kings Way and William St shunting at Dudley Street from first tram to 11:00am. 

Flinders Street Services: 

Flinders Street shuttles to operate between Stop D11 Waterfront City Docklands and Stop 4 Flinders St Station / Elizabeth Street shunting at Flinders St/Elizabeth St from 5:00am to 11:00am. 

  • Route 70 trams to operate a shortened service between Stop 31 Elgar Rd (Wattle Park Terminus) and Stop 7C John Cain / MCG Gates 4-7 shunting at the MCG. Passengers to be directed to catch a train at Richmond Station to Flinders St Station for the city from first tram to 11:00am. 

  • Route 75 trams to operate between Vermont South and Stop D2 Central Pier diverting via Spring St and La Trobe St from 4:30am to 11:00am. 

  • Route 35 City Circle to operate normal service from 11:00am. 

Sunday 11 October 

Extra tram services will commence arriving in the precinct between 4:15am and 4:30am then throughout the morning. Post event, extra services will operate from 1:45pm to 3:30pm. 

Due to the road closures implemented to support the Melbourne Marathon, trams will be running altered routes and the following service changes will apply from 4.30am to 2:00pm. 

Swanston Street / St Kilda tram Routes 1, 3/3a, 5, 6, 16, 64, 67 & 72: 

  • No trams between Flinders Street and Anzac Station 4.30am until 1:45am. 

  • Tram replacement services on St Kilda Road via Metro Tunnel – Town Hall Station to Anzac Station​ 

  • Route 1 trams operate between East Coburg and South Melbourne Beach diverting via Kings Way, William Street and La Trobe Street from 4:00am to 2:00pm. 

  • Route 6 trams to operate in two sections between Stop 133 Moreland Station/Moreland Road (Moreland Terminus) and Stop 11 Collins Street/Swanston Street shunting at Flinders Lane. Between Glen Iris and Stop 28 Punt Road/High Street shunting at High Street/St Kilda Road from first tram to 2:00pm. 

  • Route 16 tram to operate shortened services between Kew terminus and Stop 138 Luna Park The Esplanade Shunting at The Esplanade from first tram to 2:00pm. Passengers wanting to travel to Anzac Station should disembark at Stop 35 Brighton Rd/Carlisle St, and make their way to Stop 35 Carlisle St/St Kilda Rd for a tram to ANZAC station. 

  • Route 67 trams to operate in two sections between Stop 1 Melbourne University to Stop 8 Melbourne Central Station Shunting at Little Lonsdale St. Carnegie terminus and Stop 20 Anzac Station Shunting at Anzac Station. 

  • Route 64 trams to operate shortened service between Stop 68 Nepean Highway/Hawthorn Road (East Brighton Terminus) and Stop 38 Orrong Road / Dandenong Road shunting at Orrong/Dandenong Rd from first tram to 2:00pm 

  • Route 72 trams to operate a shortened service between Camberwell terminus and Stop 26 Alfred Hospital Commercial Road shunt at St Kilda / Commercial Rd from first tram to 2:00pm. Passenger to transfer to Stop 25 Commercial Road / St Kilda Road for a service to Anzac Station. 

  • Routes 3 and 5 trams to operate a shortened service between their respective suburban termini and Stop 20 Anzac Station shunting at Anzac Station. 

Flinders Street Services: 

Flinders Street shuttles to operate between Stop D11 Waterfront City Docklands and Stop 4 Flinders St Station / Elizabeth Street shunting at Flinders St/Elizabeth St from 4:30am to 2:00pm.

William Street Services: 

  • Route 58 to operate in two sections from first tram to 2:00pm between West Coburg and Stop 119 Well Street/Park Street shunting at Park/Wells Street. And Toorak and Stop 20 Anzac Station to shunt at Anzac Station. 

Bourke Street Services: 

  • No trams turning into or out of St Kilda Light Rail into Fitzroy Street from 5:45am to 12:30pm. 

  • Route 96 trams to operate between Stop 27 Blyth St (East Brunswick terminus) and Stop 132 St Kilda Station. 

Fitzroy Street: 

  • No trams from 6:00am to 1:45pm 

Tram Shuttles will operate during the event: 

  • Swanston Street shuttles to operate Stop 1 Melbourne University and stop 11 Collins St/Swanston St shunting at Flinders Lane from 4:00am to 2:00pm. 

Metropolitan bus

Due to the road closures implemented to support Melbourne Marathon, buses will be running altered routes and the following service changes will apply. 

Saturday 10 October

Route 605 

From first service to 11:00pm, services will divert via Alexandra Avenue and City Road between Anderson Street and Queensbridge in both directions and not service sections of Anderson Street, St Kilda Road, Southbank Boulevard and Domain Road. 

Sunday 11 October

Route 630

From first service to 11:00am St Kilda Street closed, detour via U-turn at Bent Street roundabout, New Street, Head Street and Drake Street. 

Route 606

From first service to 1:00pm, there will be no services between Elsternwick and Mary Street in both directions. 

Route 605

From first service to 1:30pm, services will divert via Alexandra Avenue and City Road between Anderson Street and Queensbridge in both directions and not service sections of Anderson Street, St Kilda Road, Southbank Boulevard and Domain Road. 

Route 600 and 922 

From first service to 12:00pm, services will divert via Inkerman Street, St Kilda Road, Alma Road and Barkly Street and not service Fitzroy Street. 

Route 246 

From first service to 1:00pm, services will operate between Clifton Hill and High St/ Punt Road. Services will then run Express via Punt Road, deviating via Barkly Street, St Kilda Street, Brighton Road, Glenhuntly Road to Elsternwick Station. 

A bus 246 shuttle will be implemented from High Stret/ Punt Road to Elsternwick Station via Barkly Street & Glenhuntly Road stopping all stops. 

Route 604

From first service to 12:00pm, services will terminate and commence at Alfred Hospital due to closure of St Kilda Road.
