Safety you can see
We work closely with Victoria Police and public transport operators to help make your journey safer on the public transport network.
Working to keep you safe
There are staff and many safety features across the train, tram and bus network; all working together to help keep you safe.
These include Protective Services Officers (PSOs), Authorised Officers, Transit Police, customer service staff, CCTV, emergency assistance buttons and safety zones.
Understanding your safety features will help to make your journey a safer one.
Safety you can see
Victoria Police

Victoria Police patrol the network night and day, investigating offences and conducting operations to keep you safe. You'll find PSOs patrolling at train stations in metropolitan Melbourne and major regional train stations. PSOs also patrol station car parks, on board trains, bus interchanges and the surrounding areas, on board trams and tram stops.
Customer service

Our teams are available at many stations, stops and at customer service centres to assist you. Talk to them if you need help or notice anything unusual during your journey.
Emergency assist buttons

Emergency buttons connect you directly to staff who can assist or call emergency services if needed. They’re located at train stations, and inside many train carriages and trams.
CCTV cameras

Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras are installed at many train stations, train carriages, trams and buses, with staff monitoring the network.
Safety zones

Safety zones, marked in yellow on many platforms, are well-lit, monitored by CCTV and have emergency assist buttons for quick access to staff.
STOP IT textline

If you experience or witness anti-social or unwanted sexual behaviour on public transport, you can report it to police. Text ‘STOPIT’ to 0499 455 455.
Every text helps identify and catch offenders.
STOPIT is not monitored live. In an emergency call Triple Zero (000).
