Public Transport Data Program
The program is focused on providing passengers with more timely, consistent and accurate public transport information.
The Public Transport Data Program (PTDP) is improving how the Department of Transport and Planning (DTP) provides passengers with the full suite of information they need to navigate the public transport network as it is expanded and transformed to meet the needs of a growing population.
What's new
New V/Line GTFS-R datasets released in October
PTDP has updated the following bus real-time open data feeds so passengers can have better updates on when their next bus is arriving and where it is on the network:
- GTFS-R Trip Updates
- GTFS-R Vehicle Positions (newly released data feed)
These data feeds can be accessed as part of the GTFS Realtime datasets on the Transport Victoria Open Data Portal.
What is PTDP?
Victoria’s public transport network is growing, with major new stops and ways of travelling being introduced over the next few years. This means there needs to be improvements to public transport information so passengers can get the travel information they need, whenever and however they need it.
That’s why DTP is improving our public transport data systems and capabilities as part of PTDP.
PTDP is creating more timely, consistent and accurate data about the public transport network, including up-to-date details of stop features and facilities (such as the location of entry/exit points, ramps and lifts), real-time travel information and disruption status updates.
The new and improved public transport data will be made available to the open data community, so more journey planning apps and tools can be created to give passengers more choice in how and when they get the information they need.
PTDP aims to make sure that passengers can confidently navigate the public transport network and plan their journeys from now and into the future.
What is being delivered under PTDP?
Improvements being made under PTDP include:
- Capturing more detailed information about public transport network features and facilities (such as location of entrances, lifts, ramps and important accessibility information) to help passengers better plan their journeys, no matter their abilities or knowledge of our network.
- Providing real-time public transport timetable and disruption status updates so passengers can make informed decisions about their journeys, using the right information at the right time.
- Launching the new Transport Victoria Open Data Portal to consolidate and better share open public transport data, allowing data users, app developers and researchers to access consistent, accurate and trusted data sources. This will make sure passengers can confidently choose where they get their travel information.
