Temporary traffic management accreditation sanctions
The temporary traffic management accreditation program requires that companies maintain a record of consistent, compliant temporary traffic management activities.
A Traffic Management Company’s (TMC) accreditation status is subject to consistent, compliant temporary traffic management activities, demonstrated via Department of Transport and Planning (DTP) Traffic Management Assurance (TMA) team audits.
These audits occur in accordance with the DTP TMA framework, which includes noncompliant thresholds.
This is effective from 1 September 2026.
Accreditation sanctions
Following an audit, DTP may issue an accreditation sanction in the form of conditional accreditation, an accreditation downgrade, or an accreditation cancellation.
Conditional accreditation
If a TMC has been found to commit noncompliances breaching the DTP TMA framework, a conditional accreditation sanction may be proposed.
A conditional accreditation sanction allows the TMC to continue operating at current accreditation level for a specific period. If there are no further noncompliances within the specified period, the accreditation status will be restored.
Accreditation downgrade
If a TMC has been found to breach a conditional accreditation sanction, an accreditation downgrade sanction may be proposed.
An accreditation downgrade sanction allows the TMC to operate at a lower accreditation level for a specified period. If there are no further noncompliances within the specified period, the TMC will be able to reinstate their accreditation as per temporary traffic management accreditation program requirements.
Accreditation cancellation
If a TMC has been found to breach an accreditation downgrade sanction or commit offence/s resulting in a fatality and/or three serious injuries, an accreditation cancellation sanction may be proposed.
The accreditation sanction process
The DTP TMA team may recommend that a TMC is issued an accreditation sanction in accordance with the DTP TMA framework.
1. Proposal to impose accreditation sanction
The recommendation, along with all associated evidence, is internally independently reviewed. Following the review, the TMC may be issued with a ‘proposal to impose accreditation sanction’ notice.
The notice will:
- outline the proposed accreditation sanction,
- specify the alleged area/s of noncompliance,
- specify a time frame for the TMC to respond, and
- specify the information that the TMC must provide.
2. Decision to impose accreditation sanction
DTP will review all evidence provided by the TMC and may make further enquiries to verify the response. If the TMC doesn’t respond, or doesn’t meet specified requirements, a decision to impose an accreditation sanction will be based on the evidence currently in DTP’s possession.
Following this review, the TMC may be issued with a ‘decision to impose accreditation sanction’ notice.
The notice will:
- provide an outcome of the review,
- specify the alleged area/s of noncompliance leading to the sanction being upheld,
- specify a time frame for the TMC to appeal, and
- specify the information that the TMC must provide.
3. Notice: impose accreditation sanction
DTP will review all evidence provided by the TMC and may make further enquiries to verify the response. If the TMC doesn’t respond, or doesn’t meet specified requirements, a decision to impose an accreditation sanction will be based on the evidence currently in DTP’s possession.
Following this review, the TMC may be issued with a ‘notice: impose accreditation sanction’ notice.
The notice will:
- provide an outcome of the appeal,
- specify the alleged area/s of noncompliance leading to the sanction being upheld,
- specify the impact to the company’s accreditation, and
- specify a time frame by which the TMC must comply with the impact to the company’s accreditation.
Note that it is the TMC’s obligation to inform its customers and partners of any changes to their accreditation.
