Woodland Street maintenance, Essendon

We have completed maintenance works on a section of Woodland Street in Essendon to repair the road surface, kerbs and gutters that were damaged by large tree roots.

Project status:

Complete

Update – August 2026

Works to repair a 375-metre stretch of Woodland Street, between Carnarvon Road and Salmon Avenue, are now complete.

These essential maintenance works involved a full rehabilitation to address significant damage to the road surface, as well as the kerbs and gutters, caused by large roots from trees planted in the centre median, creating uneven conditions for road users.

Twenty-six eucalyptus saplings have been planted in the centre median to replace the removed trees.

In addition to the road works, we installed an accessible pedestrian crossing facility opposite the entry to Woodlands Park, with DDA-compliant ramps on either side and a cut-through in the centre median.

We would like to thank the community for their patience and understanding while we completed this road project.

This project is part of the 2025-26 road maintenance program.

Caring for the environment

At the Department of Transport and Planning we take our environmental responsibilities seriously.

We explored multiple options to make Woodland Street smoother and safer before deciding that a rehabilitation and the removal of trees from the centre median was required.

All removed trees were replaced with a more appropriate tree species.

Working closely with Moonee Valley Council, we selected a variety of eucalyptus, a dwarf Corymbia Citriodora ‘Scentuous’ (Lemon-scented gum), which will retain the native tree character of the area while significantly reducing the likelihood of future damage to the road or risk to the community.

Moonee Valley Council will manage the maintenance of the new trees.
