Plummer Street Graham Street safety improvements

We’re making safety improvements on Plummer Street and Graham Street in Port Melbourne to make the road environment safer for pedestrians.

Project status:

Underway

Update - March 2026

Between March and May 2026, crews will work on site to install electronic speed limit signs in the school zone on Plummer Street and Graham Street.

The 40km/h electronic speed limit signs will remind drivers of the low speed environment during school drop off and pick up times.

You may notice the electronic speed limit signs are not working immediately after installation. Please note, the signs need to be connected to power by the local power authority and there can sometimes be a delay between sign installation and switch-on.

What to expect during works

  • Crews will work on site between 7.00am to 4.00pm, Monday to Friday and some Saturdays.
  • Lane closures on Plummer Street between Salmon Street and Bridge Street.
  • Lane closures on Graham Street between Plummer Street and Walter Street.
  • Pedestrian detours where crews carry out trench works on the footpath at some locations.
  • On-street parking restrictions for short periods where crews are installing signs.
  • Low to medium levels of noise during sign installation works.
  • Reduced speeds to 40km/h during work hours to keep drivers and crews safe.

Please note all dates and times are subject to change. We’ll keep community informed during works.

What we’ve done

To make Plummer Street and Graham Street safer for pedestrians, we:

  • installed a raised pedestrian crossing on the left turn slip lane on Graham Street onto Plummer Street
  • permanently closed the centre median on Plummer Street near Fishermans Bend Shopping Centre to prevent high-risk right turns onto Plummer Street
  • resurfaced sections of Plummer Street and Graham Street with asphalt and line marking near the intersection.

The raised pedestrian crossing will make the road safer for pedestrians, including Port Melbourne Secondary College students, while planning is underway for more permanent upgrades at this location.

Upgrading Smith Street for better access to Narrarrang Primary School

To support the delivery of the new school, City of Port Phillip is working with the Department of Transport and Planning and the Victorian School Building Authority to make local street upgrades to ensure safe and easy access for students.

The eastern section of Smith Street between Tarver Street and Williamstown Road will be upgraded to provide primary access to the school.

In addition to these safety improvements, City of Port Phillip have introduced a truck curfew on Smith Street during peak school times at 8am to 9.30am and 2.30pm to 4pm and a safer speed limit of 40km/h on Smith Street and Tarver Street.

Planning to improve safety and access on Smith Street is ongoing. For information about community engagement and upgrades on Smith Street please visit the City of Port Phillip website
