What we've done

We’ve making safety improvements at the intersection of Williamstown Road and Smith Street to make the road environment safer for everyone.

We have:

  • installed a pedestrian and bike rider crossing with traffic lights on Williamstown Road west of Smith Street
  • installed a raised pedestrian crossing across Smith Street at the intersection of Williamstown Road
  • introduced a 40km/h school zone on Williamstown Road between Prohasky Street and Salmon Street from 8am to 9.30am and 2.30pm to 4pm on school days with electronic speed limit signs
  • closed the right turn lane and centre median on Williamstown Road to prevent right turns onto and out of Smith Street
  • built a continuous footpath along Williamstown Road across Leith Crescent
  • built kerb outstands and installed warning signs at the intersection
  • removed of one parking space on Williamstown Road west of Smith Street and one parking space on Smith Street to make space for the new pedestrian crossings and traffic lights.

The new crossing with traffic lights is operating and the 40km/h electronic speed limit signs will remind drivers of the low speed environment, making the road safer during school drop off and pick up times.

Background

The Victorian Government has committed to opening 100 new schools by 2026 to support the needs of growing communities. As part of this commitment, a new primary school and kindergarten was built by the Victorian School Building Authority at the corner of Williamstown Road and Smith Street. The school opened in 2026 and the kindergarten will open in 2027.

Together with the City of Port Phillip, we delivered road safety upgrades to support safe access to a new school and kindergarten on Williamstown Road and nearby residential and retail areas in Port Melbourne.

The safety improvements on Williamstown Road and Smith Street have made the intersection accessible and safer for everyone.

These safety improvements were delivered with funding from the Fishermans Bend Urban Renewal Area Development Contribution Plan.
