Road safety improvements on Nicholson Street and Albion Street
We've made safety improvements on Nicholson Street and Albion Street in Brunswick East to reduce the risk of run-off road crashes and make the road safer for everyone.
Complete
What we’ve done
To make Nicholson Street and Albion Street safer for everyone, we are:
- built two raised safety platforms at the bend on Nicholson Street and Albion Street between Lyndhurst Crescent and Glenmorgan Street
- relocated the existing cushions (speed humps) to the approach of the raised safety platforms
- refreshed line marking and resurfaced the asphalt on Nicholson Street and Albion Street along the bend to improve skid resistance
- reconstructed the centre median island and kerbs
Works to improve street lighting at the bend on Nicholson Street and Albion Street will be completed in 2026 by the external lighting authority.
These upgrades will slow down motorists on approach to the bend on Nicholson Street and Albion Street have improved visibility and skid resistance of the road making it safer for road users.
We’re grateful for the patience and support of the local residents while we completed these important safety improvements.
Project background
Nicholson Street - Albion Street in Brunswick East is an arterial road in a residential area nearby recreational facilities at Jones Park and Merri Creek Trail and connects residents and commuters to Melbourne CBD.
In the 5 year period ending December 2020, 3 run-off-road crashes were recorded on Nicholson Street and Albion Street between Lyndhurst Crescent and Glenmorgan Street and one crash resulted in serious injury.
Infrastructure plays a vital role in preventing serious crashes. It also helps reduce the severity of crashes when they’re unavoidable.
These safety improvements were made thanks to the Australian Government’s investment into the Road Safety Program, in partnership with the Victorian Government.
Projects nearby
We’re installing electronic speed limit signs and making other safety improvements along Nicholson Street and Holmes Street in Coburg and Brunswick to make the road environment safer for all road users. We expect construction to start in 2026.
