Nicholson Street and Holmes Street safety improvements

We’re installing electronic speed limit signs and making other safety improvements along Nicholson Street and Holmes Street in Coburg and Brunswick to make the road environment safer for all road users.

What we're doing

In 2022, we introduced safer 40km/h and 50km/h speed limits on Nicholson Street and Holmes Street between Bell Street in Coburg and Albion Street in Brunswick.

To remind motorists of the low speed environment, we’re installing electronic speed limit signs along Nicholson Street and Holmes Street between Albion Street and Moore Street and installing road markings and warning signs between Albion Street and Bell Street.

We expect construction to start in 2026. We’ll keep the community updated as project planning progresses.

Background

Nicholson Street and Holmes Street are located between Sydney Road and St Georges Road in Melbourne’s northern suburbs and connect residents and commuters with transport options to the CBD.

In the five-year period to December 2023, 61 crashes occurred on Nicholson Street and Holmes Street between Bell Street and Albion Street and 21 crashes caused serious injury.

In 2022, we introduced a safer 50km/h speed limit on Nicholson Street and Holmes Street between Bell Street and Albion Street to reduce the risk of crashes and make the road environment safer for all road users.

We also introduced a 40km/h speed limit on Nicholson Street and Holmes Street between Moore Street and Albion Street at 7am to 12pm daily.

Pedestrians are completely exposed to the full force of a crash, making them some of the most vulnerable road users.

By making the speed right for the road, we’ll make the road environment safer for all road users.

When electronic speed limit signs are installed in a speed limit zone, they flash to remind drivers to be extra vigilant and obey the speed limit, making the road safer for pedestrians, including shoppers, children and families during busy peak hours.

These proposed upgrades have been made thanks to the Victorian Government’s 2024-25 Metropolitan Road Upgrades Program.

New 40km/h school speed zone on Bell Street

On 7 October 2024, we introduced a new 40km/h school speed zone on Bell Street between Pentridge Boulevard and Elizabeth Street.

The 40km/h speed limit operates during school drop off times (8am – 9:30am) and pick up times (2:30pm – 4pm).

Planning is underway to deliver seven new electronic speed limit signs along this section of Bell Street to help remind drivers to slow down to 40km/h and look out for pedestrians.
