Next Generation Trams enabling infrastructure works

Route 57

We are getting Route 57 in Melbourne’s north west ready for the next generation of trams, the G Class as part of the Next Generation Trams enabling infrastructure works.

G Class trams will set a new standard for modern public transport by delivering a more comfortable, accessible and energy efficient journey for passengers.

The 25-metre-long G Class trams hold up to 150 passengers – almost twice as many as the oldest trams currently operating in Melbourne’s west.

They feature a more accessible low-floor design, more doors, handrails and improvements to passenger information to make it easier for everyone to use public transport.

The first G Class trams have begun testing, ahead of taking passengers on routes 57, 59 and 82 over coming years.

About Route 57

Route 57 operates from West Maribyrnong to Flinders Street Station via Flemington, North Melbourne and the CBD.

G Class trams operating on Route 57 will provide better connectivity to key destinations such as Highpoint Shopping Centre, Melbourne Central, Melbourne Showgrounds and Flemington Racecourse.

Works are being undertaken in stages, with initial works starting in the second half of 2025.
