Next Generation Trams enabling infrastructure works

We are getting routes 57, 59 and 82 in Melbourne’s north west ready for the next generation of trams, the G Class.

G Class trams will set a new standard for modern public transport by delivering a more comfortable, accessible and energy efficient journey for passengers.

The 25-metre-long G Class trams hold up to 150 passengers – almost twice as many as the oldest trams currently operating in Melbourne’s west.

They feature a more accessible low-floor design, more doors, handrails and improvements to passenger information to make it easier for everyone to use public transport.

The first G Class trams have begun testing, ahead of taking passengers on routes 57, 59 and 82 over coming years.

What's happening

In preparation for G Class trams to operate safely on routes 57, 59 and 82 we need to make improvements to the tram infrastructure in Melbourne’s north west.

We're carrying out critical safety works across all three routes. Works will range from traffic signal changes and relocating tram stops to installing new signage and tactile ground surface indicators.

Works along these routes will help ensure all stops can safely accommodate the new 25-metre-long trams and passengers can safely get on and off.

The changes align with Melbourne's Tram Plan to create a more efficient tram network, capable of moving more people to more places, and designed to support a growing and changing Melbourne.

Benefits for public transport users

We expect that future Melbourne will have more people using trams than ever before.

Upgrading our network's infrastructure is essential to ensuring we provide a safe and accessible service to all passengers, meeting future needs and supporting more tram services to run.

Works timing

Works are being undertaken in stages. Works on Route 57 and Route 59 are underway.

We’ll update this page regularly and notify the community of any construction impacts in advance of works starting.
