Maroondah Aqueduct bridge maintenance, Eltham-Yarra Glen Road
We are delivering maintenance works to the Maroondah Aqueduct bridge on Eltham-Yarra Glen Road just to the west of Yarra Glen to ensure it’s a stronger, safer bridge for all road users.
Underway
The bridge is safe for all light vehicles and approved heavy vehicles. These works are needed to ensure approved heavier vehicles can continue to travel over it without further restrictions.

We are working on the bridge in stages to minimise impact to the community.
- Stage 1 – Maintenance repairs
- Late November 2024 to January 2025: completed
- Stage 2 – Various works, including removal of existing pavement, installation of support piles, reinstating temporary pavement
- February 2025: completed
- Stage 3– Removal of bridge deck, reinforcement and rebuilding bridge deck.
- Expected disruption: Up to two weeks full closure with major detours in place.
- Road closure: Expected in September 2025 (exact timing subject to works program and weather)
- Stage 4 – Restoring the bridge road surface, installation of barriers and signs.
- Expected disruption: Speed reduction, occasional single lane closure.
- By end of 2025 (weather dependant). Works will commence after Stage 3 is complete.
Project update – March 2025
Stage 1 was completed in January. This included site investigation and establishment, defect repairs and preparation for the next stage of works.
Stage 2 was completed ahead of schedule in mid-February. Road works speed limits will be removed and the road returned to its signed speed limit until we return for Stage 3.
Stage 3 will involve a full closure of the bridge for up to two weeks. There is no alternative to closing the bridge for this stage of works. We have postponed this next stage of works until later in the year to prepare for the full closure.
We will return to complete Stage 3 works in the September school holidays and will provide more information before works restart.
Public transport
Bus routes will not be affected during these works.

Background
This bridge over the Maroondah Aqueduct was built between the late 1800s and early 1900s; the bridge and the aqueduct are heritage listed and protected. We have worked closely with Heritage Victoria to understand the heritage status of the bridge and aqueduct and maintain their historical importance.
Eltham-Yarra Glen Road is the only east-west route between Yarra Glen and the Eltham/Diamond Creek region. Approximately 5,447 vehicles travel on Eltham-Yarra Glen Road per day, with 12% being heavy vehicles.
Without this maintenance work a load limit would need to be applied to the bridge in the near future restricting the types of vehicles that could use the bridge.
