Intersections and giving way
How to use intersections and give way in Victoria.
You can be fined or get demerit points if you break these road rules.
Intersections
Type of intersection
| What you must do

Has a sign or line directing you to 'stop' or 'give way'
| Give way to any vehicle in, entering or approaching an intersection, unless the vehicle is:

No traffic lights, signs or lines
| Give way to any vehicle entering or approaching the intersection from your right. If you are turning right, give way to oncoming vehicles going straight through the intersection or turning left. You don't need to give way to cars using a slip lane. |
T-intersection
| Give way to all vehicles travelling in the road you are turning into (the continuing road). |
Pedestrians
| Vehicles must give way to pedestrians crossing the road they are turning into when turning at an intersection or driveway. |
Bicycle riders
| Vehicles preparing to turn left must give way to bicycle riders travelling straight ahead, before starting to turn. |
Divided roads
When turning onto a two-way road divided by a median strip, give way to traffic on both sides of the median strip if there is a 'stop' or 'give way' sign.
If turning from the centre of the divided road, you must obey the signs on the road you are turning from.
If there is no sign, you must give way to all traffic when you:
- enter the break in the median strip
- leave the median strip to enter the road.
Entering or leaving a road
Give way to all vehicles and pedestrians when you enter or leave a road from:
- a driveway
- the side of the road
- a break in the median strip
- nearby land.
Sharing lanes
You may be driving within the same lane as another vehicle, for example:
- a car sharing with a bicycle
- two motorcycles.
You must give way to the other vehicle if you move left or right within the lane.
Rules for intersections and giving way
The key road rules and reference numbers for giving way are:
- 38 - Giving way when making a U-turn
- 62 - Giving way when turning at an intersection with traffic lights
- 63 - Giving way at an intersection with traffic lights not operating or only partly operating
- 64 - Giving way at a flashing yellow traffic arrow at an intersection
- 65 - Giving way at a marked foot crossing (except at an intersection) with a flashing yellow traffic light
- 66 - Stopping for twin red lights (except at level crossings)
- 67 - Stopping and giving way at a stop sign or stop line at an intersection without traffic lights
- 68 - Stopping and giving way at a stop sign or stop line at other places
- 69 - Giving way at a give way sign or give way line at an intersection (except a roundabout)
- 70 - Giving way at a give way sign at a bridge or length of narrow road
- 71 - Giving way at a give way sign or give way line at other places
- 72 - Giving way at an intersection (except a T-intersection or roundabout)
- 73 - Giving way at a T-intersection
- 74 - Giving way when entering a road from a road related area or adjacent land
