Rail Safety Week

Every year, Rail Safety Week (RSW) brings together rail operators, governments, industry and communities across Australia and New Zealand to raise awareness of rail safety.  

Transport Victoria is proud to support TrackSAFE's Rail Safety Week and work with partners across Victoria to encourage safe behaviours around trains and level crossings.

This year’s RSW theme is focused on safety at railway crossings. Whether you're walking, driving or riding near railway crossings, stay alert, and take a moment to stop, look and listen to keep you and everyone safe. 

Rail Safety Week 2026 activities

Throughout Rail Safety Week, Transport Victoria is supporting a range of activities to help promote safe behaviours that will help reduce incidents and improve safety around trains and level crossings.

Launch of the Timeline VR experience

Transport Victoria and Metro Trains Melbourne are launching Timeline, an immersive virtual reality education experience designed to help young Victorians understand the real-life consequences of unsafe behaviour around rail environments.

Developed in partnership with rail safety experts, educators and young people, the experience uses immersive storytelling to explore risks such as trespassing, distraction and unsafe behaviour near trains.

During the week, an activation at Broadmeadows Central Shopping Centre will take place.

Flinders Street Station lighting 

During Rail Safety Week, Flinders Street Station will be illuminated in TrackSAFE’s Rail Safety Week colours (yellow and black), to help raise awareness of the importance of rail safety and encourage conversations across the community. 

As one of Victoria's most recognisable landmarks, this provides a visible reminder for all Victorians to take extra care around trains and tracks.

Supporting TrackSAFE and rail industry partners

Transport Victoria is working alongside the TrackSAFE Foundation, Metro Trains Melbourne, V/Line and other rail industry partners to amplify rail safety messages, and will run a small campaign sharing rail safety content across social media, digital and radio channels throughout the week.

Messaging will focus on:

• Encouraging people to stop, look and listen, by staying alert and avoiding distractions such as mobile phones and headphones when near tracks.
• Promoting other safe behaviours at stations and platforms such as
  • Keeping tracks clear and never stopping on train tracks
  • Only crossing at designated crossing points.
  • Always obey signs, signals and boom gates.
  • Never stop on train tracks or level crossings.
  • Keep behind the yellow line on station platforms.
