You can get a free three-year driver’s licence if you have a good driving record while you’re on your probationary licence.  


VicRoads offers eligible probationary drivers a free, three-year licence for good driving.

VicRoads will contact you if you're eligible to get the free licence. Check your mailing address is up to date in your myVicRoads account

Who's eligible

VicRoads offers a free three-year licence when you’re ready to move to your full driver’s licence.  

You’re eligible if:

  • you'll be under 25 when your probationary licence expires
  • you’ve had a Victorian probationary licence (any kind) for 4 years
  • you haven’t had any traffic related offences while on your Ps, including:
    • demerit point offences
    • drink driving
    • drug driving
    • speed offences
    • seat belt/occupant and restraint offences
    • unlicensed, unauthorised and disqualified driving
    • traffic offences causing death or injury
    • hit-and-run or accident-related offences
    • dangerous and reckless driving offences
    • failing to obey traffic signs/signals and roundabout offences
    • breach of novice driver/rider conditions
    • fatigue management offences
    • miscellaneous safety-related offences
    • commercial driver offences
    • disobeying police
    • unregistered vehicle use.

You may be eligible to apply if your licence was suspended due to:

  • medical reasons
  • a  Fines Victoria  licence suspension
  • a court conviction for a non-driving related offence (for example, community sentencing reform).
