Heavy vehicle road access in Victoria

Truck curfews and the inner west

Truck curfews let truck operators know when they can use certain roads, helping balance community amenity with keeping freight moving. Now that the West Gate Tunnel has opened, some curfews have changed.

Inner west truck curfews and no-truck zones

Trucks have access to new roads, tunnels, and ramps as part of the West Gate Tunnel Project, including new purpose-built ramps for oversize and placarded loads.

Now the tunnel is open, no-truck zones have been introduced on some inner west streets, and there have been changes to existing truck curfews.

These curfews had been in place since 2001 to improve safety and community amenity in the inner west.

  • The truck curfew on Hyde Street, south of Francis and Whitehall Streets, has been lifted to allow trucks to use the new Hyde Street ramps. This is to ensure oversize and placarded loads have a safe and direct route to and from the Port of Melbourne as well as to local industry.
  • The 24/7 truck ban on Hyde Street north of Francis Street remains in place and will continue to be enforced with on-the-spot fines.
  • 24/7 no-truck zones have replaced truck curfews on Somerville Road, Moore Street and Francis Street. Cameras will be used for enforcement and fines will apply.
  • Napier Street, Footscray Bridge structure still has a height clearance of 4 metres in both directions.

We're working with the National Heavy Vehicle Regulator (NHVR) to ensure a fair and consistent approach to enforcing these rules.

The NHVR national network maps also shows Victorian roads that have time or mass access restrictions for trucks, including local roads.

Enforcement

Truck curfews and no-truck zones are monitored and enforced by NHVR.

We continue to work closely with the freight industry and local businesses to educate and inform them of alternate travel routes.

Signs are in place on local roads and the surrounding road network to let drivers know and allow them to plan their trips.

Reporting breaches

Road rule violations (e.g. speeding, distracted driving, or an intoxicated driver) should be reported to Victoria Police.

Truck restriction breaches or concerns about vehicles that are smoky or noisy, should be reported to the NHVR on 136 487.
