Mobile roadworks

Find out what mobile roadworks are and how to drive safely near mobile roadworks convoys on the road.

What is mobile roadwork?

Mobile roadwork is road maintenance works that cannot be confined to a single work site under static traffic management. This includes line marking, pothole repairs, vegetation management and other critical maintenance and inspections.

These types of works are constantly moving, so we use mobile roadwork convoys to control traffic and keep road users and our crews safe.

What is a mobile roadwork convoy?

The make up of mobile roadwork convoys can differ depending on the type of works being delivered, the location of the works and the required traffic management.

Each convoy usually includes five to six vehicles that each play a role in notifying and directing traffic and delivering works.

  • Lead vehicle – warns oncoming motorists of works and shields workers from traffic
  • Work vehicle – delivers the work, for example a line marking truck
  • Shadow vehicle – follows closely behind the work vehicle to protect workers
  • Tail vehicle – warns and diverts traffic
  • Advance warning vehicle – follows behind the convoy at a distance (typically 1km) to provide advance notice to motorists

What to do when you are driving near a mobile roadwork convoy?

When you encounter a mobile roadwork convoy on the road you should:

  • Slow down – Mobile roadwork convoys will be travelling significantly slower than the marked speeds.
  • Follow the convoy’s instructions, directions and signage
  • Wait behind the convoy until it is safe to pass – The workers in the convoy are constantly communicating and will provide an opportunity for you to pass when it is safe to do so.

Mobile roadworks take place in varied environments, so you may need to take different action each time you encounter a convoy. To keep yourself and our crews safe, it’s important to drive slowly, be patient and follow the directions of the convoy.

Remember, road rules still apply when interacting with a convoy.
