Medical conditions and reviews

Medical conditions

Tell our medical review team if you’re a driver with one of these medical, neurological, physical, or serious psychiatric conditions.

A condition of being licensed to drive is that all motorists are required to advise Medical Review of any serious, permanent or long term illness, disability, medical condition or injury that may impair their ability to drive private and/or commercial vehicles safely.

Drivers are obligated under law to self-report any medical condition(s) impacting their ability to drive safely, and we encourage people with medical conditions to speak with their doctor to understand their health conditions and the potential impact on their driving.

Medical Review’s fitness to drive assessments are in line with the Assessing Fitness to Drive Guidelines.

Please note that commercial drivers (including heavy vehicle drivers) must meet strict safety standards in Victoria. If you have a medical condition and want to drive commercially, you’ll need to undertake a medical review so we can assess your ability to drive safely.

Talk to your doctor

It is important to get regular check-ups and ensure you tell your health professionals (doctors, specialists, eye doctors and pharmacists) that you drive. Talk to them about these factors:

  • Your medical condition and how it may affect your ability to drive.
  • Your medicines and how they can affect how you drive. You can also talk to a pharmacist about side effects.

You should also talk to your doctor about driving safety if you have:

  • a short-term health condition
  • medical treatment (for example, eye drops for screening tests, or anaesthesia).

Conditional licences

Medical Review may add a condition(s) to your licence to allow you to keep driving safely. Examples of conditional driver licences include but are not limited to:

  • You must wear corrective lenses when driving.
  • You can only drive in daylight hours.
  • You can only drive 10km from your home address

If a driver licence condition(s) is added to your driver licence, we will let you know in writing and send out a new driver licence card for you by mail.
