X'Trapolis 2.0 trains
The Victorian Government has invested in 50 X'Trapolis 2.0 trains, and supporting upgrades to the Craigieburn Train Maintenance Facility.
Underway
New X'Trapolis 2.0 trains are now taking passengers, and rolling out on the Upfield, Craigieburn, and Frankston lines. The trains are being built in regional Victoria, supporting up to 750 local jobs across the supply chain, including up to 150 in the local Ballarat area.
How this helps passengers
These trains include new features and innovations including:
- space for around 1,225 passengers
- wider doors for easier boarding
- enhanced accessibility features, including 20 wheelchair spaces
- improved passenger information that provides more real-time journey information
- advanced air suspension systems enabling a smoother ride
- a more energy-efficient design configured for Melbourne’s rail network
- designated ‘mixed-use’ onboard spaces for bicycle and pram storage and dedicated wheelchair spaces.
More local jobs
These new trains are being made at train and tram manufacturer Alstom's Ballarat facility and are the next phase of renewal for Melbourne’s train fleet.
This project is significantly boosting Victoria’s local rolling stock manufacturing industry. It supports up to 750 local rolling stock manufacturing and supply chain jobs as well as trainee and apprenticeship positions – with a significant number of these based in the Ballarat area.
Craigieburn facility upgrade
The Craigieburn Train Maintenance Facility has also been upgraded to maintain the new six-car trains, including new roof platforms and extended maintenance pits.
The upgrades have created more space for the new trains and improved train maintenance activities, which ensures the new fleet will be more reliable and support service improvements.
