West Gate Tunnel

The West Gate Tunnel is creating better connections between Melbourne's west and the city.

The West Gate Tunnel Project is now open. It's improving travel to Melbourne's west by being an alternative to the West Gate Bridge.

What's been built

The project included:

  • twin tunnels
  • a second river crossing
  • 4 new through lanes on the West Gate Freeway
  • express lanes
  • 2.5km elevated veloway above Footscray Road
  • 14km of new and upgraded walking and cycling paths
  • 9 hectares of new parks and wetlands
  • extending Wurundjeri Way.

Travel made easy for motorists

The completed West Gate Tunnel gives drivers a choice between the tunnel or the bridge. This will ease congestion for 200,000 cars using the West Gate Freeway daily.

It also creates better connections to growing regional areas including Ballarat, Geelong and Werribee.

Community benefits

The project provides significant benefits to the local community including:

  • getting 9000 trucks a day off residential streets in the inner west
  • adding 9km of new and improved noise walls
  • more than 14km of new and upgraded cycling and walking links to popular trails and parks, with new crossings under the West Gate Freeway and major roads
  • an express route to the CBD for cyclists via a 2.5km elevated veloway above Footscray Road
  • better connected communities on either side of the freeway by building two improved, safer pedestrian bridges at Muir Street and Rosala Avenue.
