Wedderburn pedestrian safety upgrades
Planned
Overview
We’re improving safety for pedestrians, bike riders and other vulnerable road users in Wedderburn.
The Calder Highway (High Street) runs through the centre of Wedderburn and is used by a high number of heavy vehicles. There is currently no permanent pedestrian crossing infrastructure within the township, making it difficult for pedestrians, especially those with impaired mobility, to navigate and cross the road safely.
These upgrades will make it easier and safer to access Wedderburn College as well as the sporting, recreational and shopping precincts safely.
Details
The works will include:
- Installation of pedestrian operated signals replacing the existing school crossing on the Calder Highway (High Street) near Chapel Street. This will make it easier for pedestrians, especially those with impaired mobility, to navigate the road safely at any time of the day.
- Installation of wombat crossings on Chapel Street and Kerr Street (outside the supermarket). These types of crossings improve visibility of pedestrians and encourage vehicles to slow down. This will provide a pedestrian link from the IGA supermarket to the new pedestrian operated signals.
Car parking impacts
Wherever possible, we have worked to minimise the impact to on-street parking as part of this project. However, to complete works we will need to remove one car park on Chapel Street and one car park on Kerr Street.
Next steps
This project is currently in the design and development phase and is expected to begin construction in mid 2026. We’ll be in touch with more information about traffic impacts during construction closer to the start date.
