Vineyard Road, Diggers Rest – Bridge Expansion Joint Replacements

What we’re doing

We’re replacing the bridge expansion joints at the Vineyard Road bridge over the Calder Freeway in Diggers Rest.
These works will create smoother journeys for drivers using the bridge that connects Diggers Rest to Sunbury.

Works will involve:

• removing the existing expansion joints on the bridge
• installing the new expansion joints to match the height of the road
• reinstating the road surface and line marking.

When to expect us

Works are expected to start from mid-July and be completed in mid-August 2026. 
We expect most works to be completed between 9pm and 6am, Sunday to Thursday. There may be times we need to work Friday and Saturday nights to complete essential works. 
Dates and times are subject to change due to weather conditions and the contractor’s program of works.

What to expect

• A nightly lane closure on the Vineyard Road bridge over the Calder Freeway between the freeway interchanges. Traffic controllers will be on site to guide traffic through the area one lane at a time.
• The Calder Freeway on and off ramps will remain open during night works.
• Delays of up to 5 minutes when travelling through the site.
• All lanes on the Vineyard Road bridge will reopen every day from 6am.
• Temporary steel road plates and a reduced speed limit will be in place over the bridge during the day for the safety of road users until works are complete.
• Access will be maintained for emergency service vehicles, buses and heavy vehicles during works.
