Grampians region
Find out about the maintenance work being done in the Grampians region.
We’re busy rebuilding, repairing and resurfacing roads right across the state, including key routes across the Grampians Region.
This year's road maintenance program is targeting high-traffic areas and busy freight routes, including some of the most important roads connecting communities in the west.
We regularly inspect roads and carry out emergency repairs as needed, while more extensive works, such as road rebuilding and rehabilitation, are delivered during the warmer, drier months from September to May to ensure repairs are long-lasting.
Current works
Western Highway rehabilitation works, Horsham
Rehabilitation works on the Western Highway at Horsham, between David Street and May Park Terrace, are planned.
During works, lane closures are in place on the Western Highway, with reduced speed limits to ensure the safety of crews and road users.
While the Western Highway will remain open to two-way traffic at all times, there will be side road closures, with signed local detours in place.
Please allow extra time, travel safely, and follow all signage when travelling through the area.
Please note: These dates and times are subject to change due to weather conditions.
Western Highway rehabilitation works, Kaniva
Rehabilitation works on the Western Highway at Kaniva, between Douglas Street and Eastwoods Road, are planned to start in mid July 2026.
During construction, crews will be on site for up to three weeks working between 9.30am and 4.30pm and 8pm and 5am.
During works, single lane closures are in place on the Western Highway, with reduced speed limits to ensure the safety of crews and road users.
East and westbound access points to the highway from Commercial Street West, running parallel to the Western Highway, will be closed during works.
To access the highway from the roundabout, drivers will need to head east towards Madden Street.
During works, oversize and over mass freight vehicles will be required to detour south via Natimuk and Edenhope to reach Bordertown. Please note: this detour will add approximately 45 minutes to this journey.
Please allow extra time, travel safely, and follow all signage when travelling through the area.
Please note: These dates and times are subject to change due to weather conditions.
Western Freeway rehabilitation works, Ballan
Rehabilitation works on the Melbourne-bound lanes of the Western Freeway at Ballan, between Ballan-Greendale Road and the Old Melbourne Road on-ramp, are planned to start late June/early July 2026.
Crews are working days and nights, between 9.30am and 5am, on the 490m stretch of freeway, for up to two weeks.
During works, single lane closures are in place on the Western Freeway, with reduced speed limits to ensure the safety of crews and road users.
The Melbourne-bound on-ramp to the Western Freeway at Old Melbourne Road will be closed for a period while crews repair the road surface.
During this time, motorists are encouraged to use the Geelong-Ballan Road on-ramp to enter the Western Freeway travelling towards Melbourne.
Please allow extra time, drive safely and follow all signage when travelling through the area.
Please note: These dates and times are subject to change due to weather conditions.
Western Highway rehabilitation works, Trawalla
Rehabilitation works on the Western Highway, east of Trawalla, are underway.
The works will improve road surface on a 2.4km section of the Western Highway heading east, between the Old Western Highway turn off and Black Bottom Road in Pyrenees Shire.
Crews will be on site between 7am and 5pm from Tuesday 9 June 2026, for up to two weeks.
To minimise disruptions, we’ll then switch to night works, working 6pm and 6am, for an additional two weeks.
During works, single lane closures are in place, with reduced speed limits to ensure the safety of crews and road users.
The Western Highway eastbound will be closed during nightworks, with a detour in place via Old Western Highway through the Trawalla township.
Traffic management crews will be on site to help you move through the area while we complete these important works.
Please note: These dates and times are subject to change due to weather conditions.
