Barwon South West region

Find out about the maintenance work being done in the Barwon South West region.

We’re busy rebuilding, repairing and resurfacing roads right across the state, including key routes across the Barwon South West Region.

This year's road maintenance program is targeting high-traffic areas and busy freight routes, including some of the most important roads connecting communities in the south west.

We regularly inspect roads and carry out emergency repairs as needed, while more extensive works, such as road rebuilding and rehabilitation, are delivered during the warmer, drier months from September to May to ensure repairs are long-lasting.

Current works

Princes Highway rehabilitation works, Corio

Rehabilitation works on the Princes Highway in Corio, between the northbound service centre and Bacchus Marsh Road, are underway.

Crews are working on the road surface of the 750m stretch of highway in the City of Greater Geelong between 7pm and 6am, from Sunday 21 June to Wednesday 1 July 2026.

During works, single lane closures are in place on the northbound lanes, with reduced speed limits to ensure the safety of crews and road users.

Please note: These dates and times are subject to change due to weather conditions.

Princes Highway rehabilitation works, Wandana Heights

Rehabilitation works on the Princes Highway (Geelong Ring Road) in Wandana Heights, between Pigdons Road/Thornhill Road and the Hamilton Highway, are underway.

Crews are working on the road surface of the 2.6km stretch of highway from Tuesday 9 June 2026, for up to five weeks. Works will be undertaken at night to minimise disruptions, from Sunday to Thursday, between 8pm and 6am.

During works, single lane closures are in place, with reduced speed limits to ensure the safety of crews and road users.

Please note: These dates and times are subject to change due to weather conditions.

Surf Coast Highway (Torquay Road) rehabilitation works, Grovedale

Rehabilitation works on Surf Coast Highway (Torquay Road) in Grovedale are underway.

The works will improve road surface on a 150m section of the Surf Coast Highway in both directions, between Perrett Street and Baanip Boulevard, in the City of Greater Geelong.

Crews will be on site from Monday 25 May 2026, to undertake existing service mapping works, and initial kerb and asphalting works on the centre median. These day works will be undertaken between 7am and 5pm, for one week.

To minimise disruptions, we’ll then switch to night works from Sunday 31 May 2026, working between 6.30pm to 5.30am, until late June 2026.

On-street parking spaces along the Surfcoast Highway between Peter Street and the rail bridge south of Hansen Drive will be temporarily unavailable in both directions to maintain two lanes of traffic through the work site.

There will be significant changes in traffic conditions on arterial and local roads while these works are underway. Please allow extra time for your journey as delays are expected.

Throughout nightworks, traffic disruptions will include:

  • A speed limit reduction to 40km/hr between Reserve Road and Baanip Boulevard
  • Single lane closures and traffic holds in each direction of Surfcoast Highway between Torquay Road Service Road and Perrett Street
  • Intermittent closures of Hansen Drive/Surcoast Highway and Heyers Road/Surfcoast Highway intersections with detours and traffic management in place
  • Changed access to Perrett Street, Peter Street from the Surfcoast Highway.

During nightworks, there will be detours in place for bus route 40, via Surfcoast Highway, Pioneer Road, and Burdoo Road to avoid overnight closures on Heyers Road.

On route 53, a temporary bus stop at 275 Torquay Road will replace the St Pauls Lutheran Kindergarten/Torquay Road (bus stop ID: 30891), which will not operate during the road rehabilitation project.

Traffic management crews will be on site to help you move through the area while we complete these important works.

Nightworks will pause on Sunday 7 and Monday 8 June over the King’s Birthday long weekend.

Please note: These dates and times are subject to change due to weather conditions.

Bayside Road rehabilitation works, North Geelong

Crews are working on the road surface between 7am and 6 pm, from Monday 1 June to Friday 3 July, 2026. To deliver these works safely and efficiently, the closure of  a section of Bayside Road is required.

On Monday 1 June, Bayside Road (Lowe Street) will be closed between St Georges Road and Wharf Road, with a detour in place via St Georges Road and Princes Highway.

From Tuesday 2 June to Friday 3 July, Bayside Road (Wharf Road) will be closed between Lowe Street and Refinery Jetty, with a detour in place via St Georges Road and Princes Highway.
