Barwon South West region

Maintaining our roads is an essential part of keeping millions of people and hundreds of thousands of tonnes of freight on the move across Victoria.

We regularly inspect roads and carry out emergency repairs as needed, while more extensive works, such as road rebuilding and rehabilitation, are delivered during the warmer, drier months from September to May to ensure repairs are long-lasting.

We will update this page with the new program of resurfacing and rehabilitation in the coming weeks.

Current works 

While our major road rebuilds occur during the warmer months, maintaining the road network is a year-round priority. We’re delivering more proactive maintenance during the cooler months when roads experience the greatest stress from rainfall and flooding. 

Our crews are out every day inspecting roads for hazards and defects, repairing potholes, surface issues and damaged signs, cleaning gutters and drains, mowing and clearing litter. 

Throughout the winter period, we’re doing more works to keep our main freeways open and keep people and freight on the move.  

We’ve got additional crews on the network repairing damage caused by recent rain and delivering emergency repairs where and when they’re needed. While the weather is cooler, we’ll continue to deliver increased levels of proactive works to protect against rain and flooding, ensuring our roads stand up to the growing levels of extreme weather we’re seeing.

Bayside Road rehabilitation works, North Geelong 

Rehabilitation works on Bayside Road, between Madden Avenue and St Georges Road are underway.

Crews are working on the road surface of the 530m stretch of road between 7am and 6 pm, from Monday 13 July 2026. Works are expected to take up to 12 weeks to complete.

During works there will be single lane closures in place, with temporary traffic signals in place to guide traffic through the site, one lane at a time. There will be side road closures, with signed detours and reduced speed limits in place to ensure the safety of crews and road users. 

Traffic management crews will be on site to help you move through the area while we complete these important works.

Maintenance program 2025-26

Over the last year, hundreds of kilometers have been repaired, resurfaced or rebuilt across the state as part of the 2025-26 maintenance season. This includes rebuilding and resurfacing works across the Barwon South West region. 

This year’s program targeted high-traffic areas and busy freight routes, including some of the most important roads connecting communities in the south west.

As part of the program, rehabilitation works on the following roads in the Barwon South West region were completed:

• Cobden-Warrnambool Road, between Curdies-Leichfield Road and Glenfyne-Brucknell Road (340m), and between New Brucknell Road and Ayresford Road (650m) in Corangamite Shire.
• Foxhow Road, between Cundare-Duverney Road & Lower Darlington Road at Duverney (700m) in Corangamite Shire
• Hamilton Highway
  • between Foxhow Road and Doyles Road at Berrybank (3km) in Corangamite Shire.
  • between Darlington-Terang Road and Darlington-Camperdown Road at Darlington (3.6km) in Corangamite Shire.
• Princes Highway West
  • between the northbound service centre and Bacchus Marsh Road at Corio (750m) in City of Greater Geelong. Northbound between Anakie Road and Geelong-Bacchus Marsh Road at Lovely Banks (1.1km) in City of Greater Geelong.
  • between Pigdons Road/Thornhill Road and the Hamilton at Wandana Heights (2.6km) in City of Greater Geelong.
  • between Bank Street and Philip Street at Port Fairy (500m) in Moyne Shire.
• Surf Coast Highway, between Perrett Street and Baanip Boulevard at Grovedale (150m) in City of Greater Geelong.
• Terang-Mortlake Road, between Mortlake-Framlingham Road and Hinkleys Lane at Mortlake (360m) in Moyne Shire. 

Resurfacing works were also carried out on many roads across the Barwon South West region. 

Due to a range of factors, we now plan to deliver the following rehabilitation works as part of our 2026-27 road maintenance program:

• Princes Highway West, between Ellerslie-Panmure Road and Harris Street at Panmure (980m) in Moyne Shire
