Tram Road and Merlin Street Intersection Improvements
We’re delivering safety and traffic flow improvements to the Tram Road and Merlin Street intersection in Doncaster.
Planned
Project update - January 2025
We expect intersection improvement works to begin in early 2025 and be completed by mid-2025, with switch-on of traffic lights to follow. Please note, these dates are subject to change due to weather and the contractor’s program of works.
The majority of works are expected to be completed during the day on weekdays. There will be times where crews will need to work at night and on weekends to minimise disruption to traffic and keep crews safe. No works will be scheduled on public holidays.
To keep everyone safe, a 40km/h speed limit will be in place with 24/7 lane closures at times.
Please look out for changed traffic conditions and allow extra time when travelling through the area. We'll provide advance notice on any traffic changes as the project progresses.
About the project
What we're doing
- Installing new traffic lights and pedestrian crossings at the intersection to improve driver and pedestrian safety and improve traffic flow.
- Widening Tram Road to build a dedicated right turn lane into Merlin Street. This will improve traffic flow by allowing through traffic to continue without being stopped by drivers wanting to turn right.
- Widening Merlin Street to build dedicated left and right turn lanes into Tram Road to make turns safer and easier for drivers.
- Building a new raised pedestrian crossing in Tram Road Service Road that will connect pedestrians to the new traffic lights via a pedestrian ramp.
These improvements were developed as part of Manningham Council’s Doncaster Hill Strategy and funded through the Doncaster Hill Development Contribution Plan.
Project map

Image description: A map showing the improvements being made at the Tram Road and Merlin Street intersection. A blue traffic light symbol in the centre of the intersection show that new traffic lights will be installed at Tram Road and Merlin Street. A blue walking pedestrian symbol and line marking shows the new pedestrian crossings being installed across Merlin Street and across Tram Road on the west side of the intersection. A grey raised pedestrian crossing in Tram Road Service Road with a yellow pedestrian ramp shows that pedestrians will be connected to the new traffic lights at Tram Road and Merlin Street from the service road. Arrow line markings and turning lanes highlighted in blue show the new dedicated right turn lane from Tram Road into Merlin Street and the new dedicated left and right turn lanes from Merlin Street into Tram Road.
Parking changes
Five parking spaces on Merlin Street will be removed and two parking spaces will be added with restrictions. These need to be removed to build turning lanes. Two parking spaces on Tram Road Service Road will be removed so that the raised pedestrian crossing connecting pedestrians to the new traffic lights can be built.
Environment
As part of the project, eleven trees and shrubs will be removed to widen Tram Road and Merlin Street. While there are no plans to plant new trees and vegetation at the intersection, Manningham Council will explore opportunities for replanting in the local area.
Driveway changes
During intersection improvement works, we’ll need to make changes to four driveway entrances on Tram Road and five driveway entrances on Merlin Street to widen the roads and make space for the new turning lanes. We’ll contact impacted residents and businesses about these changes before construction works begin.
