Sturt Highway (Deakin Avenue) and Sixteenth Street, Mildura intersection upgrade

We’re upgrading the intersection of the Sturt Highway (Deakin Avenue) and Sixteenth Street in Mildura with a joint investment from the Australian Government and the Victorian Government under the Road Safety program.

Project status:

Underway

Overview

Transport Victoria is upgrading the intersection of the Sturt Highway (Deakin Avenue) and Sixteenth Street in Mildura. The intersection upgrade will improve traffic flow, reduce congestion and increase safety for pedestrians at this busy Mildura intersection.

Works at the intersection include;

  • traffic signals and dedicated turning lanes
  • signalised pedestrian crossing points on all legs of the intersection (as part of traffic signals) and pedestrian refuges on the Sturt Highway (Deakin Avenue)
  • shared user paths for improved connectivity
  • upgraded lighting.

Part of the upgrade to the intersection will include closing access from the Deakin Avenue service road to Sixteenth Street. Vehicles will instead access the Sturt Highway from a new entry point to be constructed near Hoyts Avenue.

Traffic impacts

To complete the intersection upgrade, works will be delivered in stages with every effort to minimise traffic impacts where possible.

There will be lane closures at times and, during full construction, road closures will be required for the safety of our crew and all road users.

Service relocation works

Activity at the intersection will begin with service relocation and drainage works in June/July 2026.

During this time there will be lane closures and reduced speeds in place as required.

Please follow the direction of traffic crews onsite and allow additional time.

Construction

We expect to begin construction mid-September 2026 with works to continue through to April 2027.

The lengthy construction timeframe reflects the considerable work required to complete changes to access around the intersection, tree removal, installation of the traffic signals, road surface works and additional elements such as shared user path connections and relocation of bus stops.

To minimise disruption and deliver the works as safely and efficiently as possible, the works will be delivered in stages requiring closures of sections of the intersection. Detours will be in place.

Once timing and traffic impacts are confirmed, we will provide updates to the community.

Please plan ahead and allow extra time.
