Stud Road and Mcfees Road intersection upgrade, Dandenong North
Underway
Project update - January 2026
We’ve upgraded the Stud Road and Mcfees Road intersection with new traffic lights and pedestrian crossings, improving safety and access for all road users.
The new traffic lights at the intersection have been switched-on. Please be mindful of changed traffic conditions when travelling in the area.
We thank the community for their patience while we completed these important works.
What we’ve done
- Installed new traffic lights and, crossings for pedestrians and bike riders.
- Built a longer right turn lane on Stud Road into Mcfees Road.
- Built a new footpath along Stud Road from the intersection to Dandenong Stadium.
- Combined the two bus stops on the eastern side of Stud Road and moved it closer to the Mcfees Road intersection.
- Moved the bus stop on the western side of Stud Road closer to the Mcfees Road intersection, and built a raised pedestrian crossing on the Stud Road service road to connect to the relocated bus stop.
- Improved bus stop facilities.
- Improved street lighting for better visibility.
- Added new ‘Keep Clear’ line marking at the Dandenong Stadium access.
What’s next
We will be building a new shared path connection between the Mcfees Road intersection and the Dandenong Creek Trail, improving access for pedestrians and bike riders.
We’ve completed geotechnical investigations and have finalised the location and detailed design of the new shared user path.
We expect to start construction in May 2026, subject to weather and the contractor’s program of works.
Project background
Stud Road carries an average of 28,000 vehicles per day, with five percent comprising of heavy vehicles. It provides a north-south connection between Wantirna and Dandenong.
In the five-year period ending in June 2023, there were eight casualty crashes along Stud Road between the Monash Freeway and Heatherton Road; four of which resulted in serious injury and two of which resulted in a fatality.
This upgrade of Stud Road will help create safer connections between Dandenong Stadium, Dandenong Creek Trail, bus stops and homes.
This $12.6 million project is jointly funded by the Australian Government and Victorian Government under the Road Safety Program.
As part of the works, there were permanent changes to access for properties along the Stud Road service road, permanent changes to informal street parking, and impacts on trees.
Stud Road service road access changes
We have permanently closed direct access between Mcfees Road and the Stud Road service road. This will help minimise the risk of accidents at the intersection, improve traffic flow and improve safety for pedestrians.
We have built new access points on the Stud Road service road that connect directly to Stud Road, including:
- Two new service road exits on Stud Road for properties between Judith Street and Mcfees Road.
- A new service road entrance on Stud Road for properties between Mcfees Road and Cheam Street.
Street parking changes
There have been impacts to informal street parking spaces to make space for the intersection improvements and for the safety of drivers and pedestrians. Approximately 9 informal street parking spaces are expected to be removed on Mcfees Road between Stud Road and Bonita Court, and on the Stud Road service roads.
Impacts to trees
We’ve removed approximately 12 trees to create space for road widening, the new traffic lights and service road access changes. We’ve worked closely with designers and arborists to reduce impacts to trees, where possible.
We will landscape and plant 17 native trees, as part of the next stage of works to build a new shared path connection between the Stud Road and Mcfees Road intersection and the Dandenong Creek Trail.
