Strzelecki Highway overtaking lane, Mirboo North

The Victorian Government invested $8.25 million to improve safety on the Strzelecki Highway between Mirboo North and Morwell.

Complete

Update – November 2025

Final sealing works to provide the ultimate smooth and durable surface are expected to be completed in December 2025 and will take around one week.

Lane closures with traffic management and a 40km/h speed limit will be in place while these final works are being completed.

Works complete in February 2025

Construction of the new overtaking lane, safety barriers and right-hand turning lane into Creamery Road were completed in February 2025.

The new overtaking lane is giving the thousands of vehicles who use the Strzelecki Highway daily the opportunity to overtake safely between Morwell and Mirboo North.

Road safety infrastructure such as flexible safety barriers help prevent the most common crash types, head-on and run-off-road, which are involved in around 50% of Victoria’s fatal crashes. These barriers are a proven, highly effective way of preventing fatalities and serious injuries on high-speed roads.

The upgrades include:

construction of a northbound overtaking lane on the Strzelecki Highway between Mirboo North and Morwell near Creamery Road
a right-hand turn lane into Creamery Road
inclusion of left-hand side and centreline safety barriers.

Background

The Strzelecki Highway is a key link for communities and industries within South Gippsland and Latrobe Valley and provides a connection to the Princes Highway East.

The Highway crosses the Strzelecki Ranges resulting in a mountainous and winding road with a lack of overtaking opportunities due to restricted sight lines and the volume of on-coming traffic.

Prior to the upgrade, there were no northbound overtaking lanes between Mirboo North and Morwell on the Strzelecki Highway.
