School crossing upgrades - Ararat, Port Fairy and Teesdale

We’re upgrading three school crossings to improve pedestrian safety and active transport connections in Ararat, Port Fairy and Teesdale.

Project status:

Underway

The school crossing upgrades project will deliver upgrades of the existing school crossings on the Pyrenees Highway in Ararat, Princes Highway in Port Fairy and Bannockburn-Shelford Road in Teesdale.

The upgraded crossings will make it safer and easier for schoolchildren, parents, residents and cyclists to cross the road.

Construction of the crossing upgrade in Port Fairy is planned to start late September 2026 and take up to three weeks to complete.

The Ararat and Teesdale upgrades will be completed in 2026, with project timelines to be finalised.

Construction impacts

Crews will be on respective sites, Monday to Friday, between 7am and 6pm, with the possibility of some weekend works.

Traffic management will include reduced speed limits and lane closures, as required, to protect the safety of crews and road users. Road users are encouraged to plan their journey to minimise disruptions.

Temporary crossing points will be used while the dedicated school crossings are under construction. Please follow direction of traffic management personnel during this time.

Please note: dates and time frames of these works are dependent on a range of factors, including favourable weather and site conditions.

Background

Transport Victoria is delivering these school crossing upgrades as part of the Australian Government’s Road Safety Program.
