What we’ve done

We’ve introduced a safer 60km/h speed limit in sections of North Road that are currently 70km/h, to reduce the likelihood and severity of crashes and make the road safer for everyone. These changes have been implemented from Montclair Avenue in Brighton, to Crosbie Road in Murrumbeena.

The new speed limit of 60km/h is now legally enforceable. Drivers should be aware of the changed road conditions and drive carefully.

The 40km/h zone in Ormond operating from 8:00am to 8:00pm and at 60km/h at all other times  remains in place.

In the 5-year period ending in June 2024, there have been a total of 83 recorded casualty crashes occurring in the 70km/h sections of North Road. Twenty-six out of these 83 crashes resulted in serious injuries with speed attributing to the severity of collisions. Tragically two people lost their lives.

Speed is the most critical risk factor in road crashes because it influences the risk of being involved in a crash, as well as the severity of the crash outcome. Managing speed limits is key to bringing down the number of lives lost on our roads.
