Safer speed limit on Ararat-Halls Gap Road between Moyston and Ararat
We’ve introduced a safer 80km/h speed limit on Ararat-Halls Gap Road between Moyston and Ararat, to reduce the likelihood and severity of crashes and make the road safer for everyone.
Complete
What we’ve done
We’ve made it safer to travel between Moyston and Ararat, with a new 80km/h speed limit on Ararat-Halls Gap Road installed in December 2025.
This section of Ararat-Halls Gap Road has narrow lanes, sharp curves, roadside trees, wildlife activity, and no road shoulders.
This makes it challenging for drivers to see what’s ahead and react safely if something goes wrong - putting them at risk of deadly run-off-road and head-on crashes.
Changing the speed limit to 80km/h helps prevent crashes on this high-risk road, by giving everyone more time to react to the unexpected and dramatically improving their chance of surviving if a crash does happen.
Why we’ve done it
Managing speed limits is key to bringing down the number of lives lost on our roads. Speed is the most critical risk factor in road crashes because it influences the likelihood of a crash happening, and how severe it is.
On regional roads, split-second decisions can mean the difference between life and death. Whether it's a kangaroo, a car pulling out from a driveway, or momentary inattention, we all need enough time to react and avoid a crash.
At 80km/h, you have more time to see hazards and more distance to brake safely compared to 100km/h. And if a crash does occur, the difference is dramatic: in a head-on collision at 100km/h, the risk of death is nearly 100%. At 80km/h, it drops to about 40%.
