Rutherglen pedestrian safety improvements
Underway
Update - January 2026
We’re delivering safety improvements on the Murray Valley Highway (Main Street) Rutherglen for the benefit of pedestrians and other road users.
Works will begin in February 2026 and take approximately 16 weeks to complete, weather permitting.
This will involve the installation of safety infrastructure, including pedestrian-operated signals and speed cushions, and also includes asphalt works on the Murray Valley Highway (Main Street).
What to expect during construction
- To minimise disruption where possible, our crews will be using a combination of day works and night works.
- During works there will be lane closures and speed reductions on the Murray Valley Highway (Main Street) at times. There may also be impacts on adjoining streets including High Street and the Chiltern-Rutherglen Road.
- Our crews will be working day shift between 7am and 5.30pm.
- Footpath and business access will be maintained at all times.
- To complete asphalt works as quickly and safely as possible, night works and full closures of sections of the Murray Valley Highway (Main Street) will be required at times.
- Our crews will be working night shift between 6pm and 6am.
- Short-term full road closures may be required at times. Impacted stakeholders will be notified directly ahead of any full road closures.
- During road closures, detours will be in place as required. Please follow the direction of detour signs and traffic crews on site.
Every effort will be made to minimise disruption, where possible. Please plan ahead and allow extra time.
School crossing – Murray Valley Highway (Main Street).
The existing time-based school crossing on the Murray Valley Highway (Main Street) will be replaced with pedestrian operated signals as part of this project.
During works, the school crossing will be temporarily moved to the intersection of High St and continue to be operated by the school crossing supervisor.
The school crossing will continue to operate before and after school under the control of on-site traffic management and the School Crossing Supervisor.
Please keep an eye out for changed conditions and proceed safely through the area during the works.
Overview
The Rutherglen Pedestrian Safety Improvements Project will deliver pedestrian-focused safety improvements to protect vulnerable road users.
The Victorian Government and Transport Victoria are delivering safety improvements on the Murray Valley Highway (Main Street) Rutherglen including;
- installation of a pedestrian-operated signalised crossing between High Street and Murphy Street in the place of the existing time-based school crossing. This will provide a safe, controlled crossing opportunity for pedestrians. One on-street car park will be removed at this location to install the signalised crossing.
- installation of a zebra crossing on the Murray Valley Highway (Main Street) near Warrens Lane to provide a safe crossing opportunity for pedestrians.
- adding speed cushions on the approach to the pedestrian-operated signalised zebra crossing to assist in slowing vehicles on the approach to the pedestrian crossing points.
- installing raised safety platforms and zebra crossings on High Street to slow vehicles on the approach to the intersection with the Murray Valley Highway (Main Street) and provide a safe crossing opportunity for pedestrians.
- extending the 40km/h speed zone on the eastern approach to the Murphy Street roundabout from the Murray Valley Highway and Chiltern-Rutherglen Road beyond the Murphy Street roundabout.
- installing a speed cushion on Chiltern-Rutherglen Road to slow vehicles on approach to the Murphy Street roundabout.
- installation of two kerb outstands near Bowling Green Lane as a traffic calming measure to slow vehicles on their approach to the town centre. Two on-street car parks will be removed at this location for installation of the kerb outstands.
To allow the installation of safety infrastructure on the Murray Valley Highway (Main Street) and improve the visibility of pedestrians and vulnerable road users three on-street car parking spaces will be removed.
