Queens Bridge Street, Southbank works

We’re resurfacing the tram reserve and replacing poles along Queens Bridge Street, Southbank.

  • Early works from 8pm to 5am 2 August to 6 August and day works (7am to 5pm) Friday 14 August 2026
  • Main works 24/7 8pm Friday 14 August to 5am Monday 17 August 2026

We’ll also repair the bridge expansion joints on Queens Bridge Street bridge and move the overhead tram wires underground.

These critical maintenance works will deliver upgrades to the tram and road infrastructure making the tram and road network safer and more reliable and ready to meet future needs.

Early works

Where and when?

Southbound lanes of Queens Bridge Street, between Flinders Street and City Road, Southbank.

  • From 8pm to 5am, Sunday 2 August to Thursday 6 August 2026. Crews will move along as works progress.
  • From 7am to 5pm, Friday 14 August 2026.

What’s happening?

  • Removing redundant cable during night works.
  • Trenching to install conduits for new cables during day works.

What to expect?

  • Traffic lanes, bike lanes and car parking closures as required, along Queens Bridge Street.
  • Noise levels will be mostly low. There will be short periods where noise levels may slightly increase to medium.
  • No impact to trams, buses, or pedestrians.
  • Crews will move along as the works progress

Main works

Where and when?

  • Between Flinders Street and City Road, Southbank.
  • 24-hour works from 8pm, Friday 14 August to 5am, Monday 17 August 2026.

What’s happening?

  • Site and traffic management set up and removal.
  • Removing old overhead cables and place them underground.
  • Repairing two pairs of expansion joints on Queens Bridge Street bridge.
  • Re-surfacing the tram reserve along Queens Bridge Street, between Flinders Street and City Road, Southbank.

What to expect?

From 8pm, Friday 14 August to 5am, Saturday 15 August 2026, Queens Bridge Street will be closed to traffic and bikes for site and traffic management set up.

  • No impact to buses, trams or pedestrians.

From 5am, Saturday 15 August to 1am,Monday 17 August 2026:

  • There will be lane closures along Queens Bridge Street, between Flinders Street and City Road.
  • Pedestrian crossings and footpaths will remain open.
  • Bike lanes will be closed with detours via Batman Avenue, Linlithgow Avenue and Southbank Boulevard. Please follow detour signage.
  • Buses will continue to run along Queens Bridge Street during works.
  • Service changes to tram route 58, buses will replace trams.
  • Businesses located around the works will remain open. Please continue to support local business during these essential works.
  • Traffic management and signage will direct traffic. Please follow signage around works.
  • Emergency services access will remain.
  • We make every effort to reduce impacts, but medium to high levels of noise can be expected at times.
  • Crews will continue the clean-up of the worksite for a few weeks after the main works have finished.

From 1am, Monday 17 August to 5am, Monday 17 August 2026, Queens Bridge Street will be closed to traffic and bikes to remove traffic management treatments in preparation for the road opening.
