Pyrenees Highway, High Street and Inkerman Street intersection improvements, Maryborough

We’re making the intersection of the Pyrenees Highway, High Street and Inkerman Street in Maryborough safer for all road users.

Project status:

Underway

We will install raised pedestrian crossings, also known as wombat crossings, on each approach to the roundabout.

This project is being funded as part of the Australian Government Black Spot Program.

Construction 

Works are expected to start in August 2026 and take about 8 weeks, weather permitting.

Closure of Pyrenees Highway, Inkerman Street and High Street intersection

  • To complete these works as quickly and safely as possible, the intersection at Pyrenees Highway, High Street and Inkerman Street will be fully closed for 4 weeks from Monday 10 August 2026.
  • The closure is needed because crews will be working in a tight space around the roundabout with heavy machinery. Closing the intersection will reduce the overall construction time.
  • During the intersection closure detours will be in place. Please follow signage, plan ahead and allow an extra 5 minutes of travel time through the area.
  • Heavy vehicles will be detoured via existing approved b-double routes on arterial and local roads.

Parking impacts

We have reduced parking impacts as much as possible. During the intersection closure there will be impacts to car-parking spaces on High Street to allow drivers to perform a U-turn. These car parks will be reopened once the works are finished.

Three on-street car parking spaces will be permanently removed on the south-east corner of the intersection on the Pyrenees Highway to improve the visibility and safety of vehicles at the intersection.   

Overview

Between January 2017 and December 2025 there were 8 crashes at this intersection.

This project will improve safety by installing raised safety platforms and pedestrian crossings (wombat crossings), on each leg to the existing roundabout. In addition, we will be completing kerb and drainage works and improving signage and linemarking.

These crossings help slow vehicles, make pedestrians easier to see, and give people a safer place to cross. 
The design of the wombat crossings has been developed with consideration of heavy vehicles using this route and have been selected to ensure heavy vehicles can safely drive over the raised platforms.
