Public transport and road disruptions this winter

Work on major transport infrastructure projects may impact the way you travel around Melbourne and across the State this winter 2026.

Public transport disruptions

Melton will be a step closer to being boom-gate-free this winter, when the Ferris Road level crossing is removed as work progresses to remove dangerous and congested level crossings, as part of Victoria’s Big Build.

There will be disruptions to Metro Tunnel train services from 9pm Tuesday 7 July 2026 until last train on Sunday 12 July 2026. During this disruption, crews will make the most of the quieter July school holidays to remove temporary tracks and rail infrastructure in Kensington and replace it with new permanent tracks near the entrance of the Metro Tunnel.

Road disruptions

Work is powering ahead on Victoria’s biggest road project – North East Link, with the first Tunnel Boring Machine breaking through at Bulleen.

Work continues to upgrade the Eastern Freeway and M80 Ring Road and to build northern connections and interchanges to the North East Link.

Road upgrades also continue across Melbourne as part of Big Build Roads.

These works will cause transport disruptions and delays on key roads and surrounding areas. Be sure to check before you travel or take an alternative route if possible.
