Princes Highway West - Bridge Upgrades at Narrawong and Panmure
Underway
The upgrades to Surrey River Bridge at Narrawong and Mount Emu Creek Bridge at Panmure will reinforce the structures, ensuring strength and durability in order to continue to meet the demands of traffic volumes and modern freight vehicles travelling this major highway.
These works are being delivered as part of an upgrade to the Princes Highway Corridor to improve road safety and better connect people with jobs and services, and goods to market.
Update – April 2025
Works will commence on the Surrey River Bridge at Narrawong in May 2025 and are expected to take up to six months to complete.
Crews will be on site Monday to Friday, between 7am and 6pm, with the possibility of some weekend works.
Traffic management will include lane closures and reduced speed limits to protect the safety of crews and road users. Road users are encouraged to plan their journey to minimise disruptions.
Following the completion of works on the Surrey River Bridge, Narrawong, bridge upgrade works will commence on the Mount Emu Creek Bridge at Panmure.
Please note: dates and timeframes of these works are dependent on a range of factors, including favourable weather and site conditions.
Background
The Princes Highway is the main transport spine of south-west Victoria, supporting key regional industries and major regional centres.
The Surrey River Bridge, located 180 metres west of Boyers Road, Narrawong, was built in the 1960s. The Mount Emu Creek Bridge, located about 30 metres east of Billet Street, in Panmure was built in 1959.
These projects will improve road safety for all road users and better connect people with jobs and services, and goods to market on Princes Highway West.
Project funding
The Australian Government has committed $3.81 million towards upgrading the Surrey River Bridge and $2.49 million towards the Mount Emu Creek Bridge as part of a $316.3 million investment into the Princes Highway Corridor. Transport Victoria is delivering the bridge upgrades.
