Princes Highway - Geelong Road safety improvements

We’re improving safety along Princes Highway - Geelong Road, between Barkly Street in Footscray and Little Boundary Road in Brooklyn to reduce road trauma and save lives.

Underway

Update - March 2025

From early-April to late-2025, we’ll be working on site to install safety barriers on sections of Princes Highway-Geelong Road at high risk locations between Barkly Street in Footscray and Little Boundary Road in Brooklyn.

We’re working with our transport partners to schedule our works around major upgrades on the network, to minimise disruption to community and commuters.

Please note all dates and times are subject to change. We’ll keep the community updated about the works program and changes to traffic arrangements during this important safety upgrade.

What to expect during works

  • Crews will work on site on Monday to Friday at 9.30am to 3.30pm, and some Saturdays at 7am to 3pm.
  • Lane closures in sections along Princes Highway-Geelong Road where crews are installing safety barriers.
  • Two lanes in both directions will be open on Princes Highway-Geelong Road to keep traffic flowing.
  • Reduced speeds to 40km/h around the work area to protect workers and drivers.
  • The speed limit will return to 80km/h each day after works.
  • Minor tree trimming and removal along sections of Princes Highway-Geelong Road.
  • Periods of medium noise levels, vibrations, and dust – we’ll minimise these impacts as much as possible.
  • Access to properties on Princes Highway-Geelong Road will be kept open.

If Princes Highway-Geelong Road is part of your journey, please allow extra travel time and keep an eye out for changed traffic conditions.

What we're doing

Safety barriers are already in place along sections of Princes Highway-Geelong Road.

As part of this upgrade, we’re installing additional safety barriers on the centre and the left-hand side of the road at high-risk locations between Barkly Street in Footscray and Little Boundary Road in Brooklyn, providing a safer journey for people traveling along this route

Infrastructure plays a vital role in preventing serious crashes. It also helps reduce the severity of crashes when they’re unavoidable.

Mistakes happen, which as humans we can’t always avoid. What we can do is build more forgiving road infrastructure so that when a mistake does happen on the road, it doesn’t cost a life.

Environment

To make space for the safety barriers, we’ll need to trim trees and remove three trees located in the works area on Princes Highway-Geelong Road. Trees removed as part of this project will be re-used to landscape Princes Highway-Geelong Road.

We’re investigating opportunities to plant trees and shrubs along Prince Highway-Geelong Road where possible as part of landscaping works, when the safety barrier installation is completed. We’ll keep the community informed with further updates during construction.

Background

Princes Highway-Geelong Road is a major road linking suburban Melbourne to the western suburbs. It's a popular route for daily commuters, families, public transport and the freight industry.

These safety improvements are being made thanks to the Transport Accident Commission’s investment into road safety infrastructure, in partnership with the Victorian Government.

The West Gate Tunnel Project

The West Gate Tunnel Project will provide a vital alternative to the West Gate Bridge. It will provide a much needed second river crossing, quicker and safer journeys, and remove thousands of trucks from residential streets.

While works on the West Gate Tunnel Project and Princes Highway-Geelong Road are underway, we’ll work with Victoria’s Big Build partners to identify ways we can help minimise disruptions and traffic congestion in the area.

Geelong Road, Whitely Parade and Mitford Parade safety upgrades

We’ve completed safety improvement works at the Geelong Road and Mitford Parade intersection.

As part of these works, we introduced a right turn ban out of Mitford Parade and made other safety improvements to slow down traffic on the Princes Highway service lane and make the road safer for pedestrians.

Further safety improvements at the intersection of Geelong Road and Whitely Parade will be completed in 2025 as part of this upgrade.
