Princes Highway East - Bairnsdale-Dargo Road Intersection
We’re upgrading the intersection of the Princes Highway and Bairnsdale-Dargo Road to improve road safety and traffic flow in this growing area of Bairnsdale.
Planned
We’re installing traffic lights at the intersection of Princes Highway East and Bairnsdale-Dargo Road, along with other improvements to help improve traffic flow and road safety.
Works are expected to start in late-2026 and be completed in late-2027.
Details
The intersection upgrade includes:
- Installation of traffic lights to provide controlled movements through the Princes Highway and Bairnsdale-Dargo Road intersection
- Addition of left-turn slip lanes on both Princes Highway and Dargo Road
- Upgrades to street lighting and advance warning signs
- Linking the existing highway railway crossing boom gates to the new traffic lights
- Strengthening and resurfacing of the existing road pavement.
Benefits
- The new traffic lights will improve safety and traffic flow at the intersection by introducing controlled left and right turns.
- Upgraded street lighting and new signage will improve visibility and awareness for drivers.
- The project will promote greater efficiency and sustainability and support strategic investment in the region.
Traffic impacts
We understand roadworks can be disruptive, and we will make every effort to minimise the impact on road users.
There will be some disruption to traffic at times with lane closures and reduced speed limits.
We will provide advance notice of traffic changes as the construction starts and works progress.
Background
The project is part of the Australian Government’s $322.9 million commitment towards upgrades along the Princes Highway in Victoria. The project is jointly funded by the Australian and Victorian governments.
This project has been informed by our engagement with the community of Bairnsdale on ways to improve safety, traffic flow and investment through this growing regional town.
