We’re upgrading two key intersections in Traralgon as part of the Princes Highway East – Princes Highway and Breed St Intersection Upgrade project. This includes improving access, connectivity and safety on the Princes Highway and Breed Street intersection and the Shakespeare Street (Hyland Highway) roundabout. The Australian Government is contributing $6.63 million towards this project.
Underway

Update – January 2025
Construction works have started on the Princes Highway and Breed Street intersection upgrade.
Works are taking place during the day, Monday to Friday, and to minimise the impact to traffic at this busy intersection, works that involve lane closures will primarily take place at night.
Night works are from 8pm to 6am, from Monday to Friday. There will be no night works on weekends or on public holidays.
Access to properties and businesses will be maintained at all times during the works.
Works are expected to be completed by mid-2025.
Traffic impacts
We understand roadworks can be disruptive and have made every effort to minimise the impact to road users.
To keep everyone safe, a 40km/h speed limit will be in place.
Please look out for changed traffic conditions and allow extra time when travelling through the area.
We will provide advance notice on any traffic changes as the project progresses.
Thank you for your patience as we deliver this important safety project.
Overview
Transport Victoria is delivering this project on behalf of the Victorian and Australian Governments.
The Australian Government is contributing $6.63 million towards this project, as part of its $316.3 million commitment to upgrade the Princes Highway Corridor in Victoria.
Traralgon is the largest and fastest growing city within the Latrobe Valley region.
Over the past decade, there has been consistent population growth with more people moving to the region to live and work resulting in significant development in the central district.
The Princes Highway and Breed Street intersection and the Shakespeare Street (Hyland Highway) roundabout play a significant role in connecting resident developments to the Traralgon CBD.
The intersection at Breed Street connects the highway to residential development on the north-west side of Traralgon and the Traralgon CBD.
Shakespeare Street (Hyland Highway) joins Traralgon and Yarram and is the main freight route from southeast Gippsland to the Latrobe Valley.
The existing signalised intersection and roundabout operate at close to capacity during both morning and afternoon peak periods.
We will be delivering improvement works at this key intersection and roundabout to help the community move around more safely and efficiently.
The upgrade will create a more efficient journey for all road users travelling around or through Traralgon via the Princes Highway and Hyland Highway and improve access to key commercial, school and residential areas.
The project is part of the Australian Government’s $316.3 million commitment to upgrade the Princes Highway corridor in Victoria.
Protecting our environment
Our project teams develop designs to retain as much vegetation as possible.
However, some non-native vegetation will need to be removed as part of this project.
An environmental assessment for these works has been completed and work will be carried out in accordance with a construction environmental management plan.
