Princes Highway East - Princes Highway and Breed Street intersection upgrade, Traralgon
We’ve upgraded two key intersections in Traralgon as part of the Princes Highway East – Princes Highway and Breed St Intersection Upgrade project. The works have improved access, connectivity and safety on the Princes Highway and Breed Street intersection and the Shakespeare Street (Hyland Highway) roundabout. The Australian Government contributed $6.63 million towards this project and is part of their $316.3 million investment into the Princes Highway corridor.
Complete
Update – May 2025
The intersection upgrade works on the Princes Highway and Breed Street intersection and the Shakespeare Street (Hyland Highway) roundabout have been completed.
Construction works started in December 2024 and were completed ahead of schedule. Night works took place during January and February to fast-track completion and minimise traffic disruption.
These important upgrades will have long term benefits for safety and traffic flow in Traralgon. The works have improved safety and connectivity between key commercial and residential areas and reduced the likelihood and severity of crashes.
The upgrades included:
- installing a new left turn lane from the Princes Highway eastbound on to Breed Street northbound
- extending the right-turn lane from the Princes Highway eastbound to Shakespeare Street.
- extending the left-turn acceleration lane from Shakespeare Street onto the Princes Highway westbound
- constructing an additional eastern approach lane to the Shakespeare Street/Bank Street roundabout
- upgrading road pavement and surfacing and
- upgrading street lighting.
Thank you for your patience as we delivered this important safety project.

Overview
Traralgon is the largest and fastest growing city within the Latrobe Valley region.
Over the past decade, there has been consistent population growth with more people moving to the region to live and work resulting in significant development in the central district.
The Princes Highway and Breed Street intersection and the Shakespeare Street (Hyland Highway) roundabout play a significant role in connecting resident developments to the Traralgon CBD.
The intersection at Breed Street connects the highway to residential development on the north-west side of Traralgon and the Traralgon CBD.
Shakespeare Street (Hyland Highway) joins Traralgon and Yarram and is the main freight route from southeast Gippsland to the Latrobe Valley.
The signalised intersection and roundabout operated at close to capacity during both morning and afternoon peak periods.
We have delivered improvement works at this key intersection and roundabout to help the community move around more safely and efficiently.
The upgrade will create a more efficient journey for all road users travelling around or through Traralgon via the Princes Highway and Hyland Highway and improve access to key commercial, school and residential areas.
