Project update - December 2024
The new traffic lights at the Point Cook Road and Sneydes Road intersection have been switched on, improving safety and access for drivers.
All turning movements are permitted at the Point Cook Road and Sneydes Road intersection, including right turns into and out of Sneydes Road. The Point Cook Road service lane has also reopened.
Pedestrians and bike riders will be able to use the new signalised crossing at the intersection to cross Sneydes Road. Footpath detours will be in place for pedestrians crossing Point Cook Road until final works are completed in early 2025.
Construction will be continuing along Point Cook Road and Sneydes Road in early 2025. Please be aware of changed traffic conditions when travelling in the area.
Shared user path detours in early January 2025
In early January 2025, crews will be working within the nature strip on the corners of the Jamieson Way/Sanctuary Lakes Boulevard roundabout.
From Tuesday 7 January to Tuesday 14 January 2025, works will take place on the northeast corner along Point Cook Road, opposite Sanctuary Lakes Shopping Centre.
From Monday 13 January to Saturday 21 January 2025, works will take place on the southeast corner along Point Cook Road, opposite Sanctuary Lakes Shopping Centre.
Minor detours will be in place for pedestrians and bike riders using the shared user path on Point Cook Road opposite Sanctuary Lakes Shopping Centre. Please observe directional signs in place. Access to the Sanctuary Lakes Shopping Centre and surrounding properties will remain open.
Traffic changes at Middle Park Drive
Drivers can only turn left from Middle Park onto Point Cook Road. This is a permanent change to traffic movements to help eliminate the risk of side impact crashes.
Vehicles that wish to exit Middle Park Drive to travel towards the Jamieson Way/Sanctuary Lakes Boulevard roundabout will need to turn left onto Point Cook Road and then U-turn at the new signalised intersection at Point Cook Road and Sneydes Road.
Oversize and over-dimensional vehicles will not be able to U-turn at the intersection. A detour is in place via Sneydes Road, Boardwalk Boulevard and Dunnings Road.
Construction shutdown over the holiday period
No works will be undertaken between Saturday 21 December 2024 and Monday 6 January 2025. Works will recommence from Tuesday 7 January 2025.
During the construction shutdown, one lane will be open in both directions along Point Cook Road. A reduced speed limit of 40km/h will remain in place to keep road users safe.
Public transport changes
- The Point Cook Village/Point Cook Road bus stop remains temporarily closed during works.
- The Middle Park Drive/Point Cook Road bus stop is temporarily closed.
While these bus stops are closed, passengers can use the bus stop at Sanctuary Lakes Shopping Centre/Point Cook Road.
Please visit the Public Transport Victoria website to stay updated with the latest disruption information.

Intersection upgrade: What we’re doing
As part of the intersection upgrade works, we will:
- install new traffic lights at the Point Cook Road and Sneydes Road intersection
- install pedestrian crossings at the intersection
- duplicate Point Cook Road traffic lanes between Jamieson Way and Gramercy Boulevard
- resurface Point Cook Road between Jamieson Way and Gramercy Boulevard
- upgrade the shared user path for people walking and bike riding
- update line marking
- upgrade street lighting between Jamieson Way and Gramercy Boulevard.
Changes to vehicle movements
To eliminate the risk of side impact crashes, the ability to turn right across Point Cook Road from Middle Park Drive and Point Cook Village will be removed. ‘Keep clear’ line marking will be installed on Point Cook Road at the Middle Park Drive intersection to provide space for vehicles entering Point Cook Road from Middle Park Drive.
Our Road Safety Assessment indicates it is not safe for drivers to make these right turn movements across multiple lanes.
Permanent changes to Point Cook Village
- Vehicles that wish to enter Point Cook Village will be able to do so as usual.
- Vehicles exiting Point Cook Village to travel south towards Sneydes Road will need to turn left and then utilise the roundabout at Jamieson Way and the Sanctuary Lakes Boulevard.
Permanent changes to Middle Park Drive
- Vehicles travelling towards the Jamieson Way/Sanctuary Lakes Boulevard roundabout that wish to enter Middle Park Drive will be able to do so by utilising the roundabout, heading south along Point Cook Road and turning left into Middle Park Drive.
- Vehicles that wish to exit Middle Park Drive to travel towards Jamieson Way and Sanctuary Lakes Boulevard will need to turn left onto Point Cook Road and then U-turn at the new signalised intersection at Sneydes Road.

Project background
This T-intersection is made up of two roads—Point Cook Road, which is an arterial road and Sneydes Road, which is a local road.
Currently, drivers are waiting long periods to turn right onto Point Cook Road from Sneydes Road due to large traffic volumes, making it difficult and unsafe for everyone attempting to turn into constantly flowing traffic. This also causes traffic to bank up and creates congestion during peak hours.
Point Cook and Sneydes Roads connect the community to the Princes Freeway, other Western suburbs, many schools and childcare centres and the large Sanctuary Lakes Shopping Precinct.
There is currently no location for people walking or bike riding to safely cross Point Cook Road between Jamieson Way and Gramercy Boulevard.
Point Cook Road has approximately 32,000 vehicles travel on it each day and Sneydes Road has approximately 11,000.
Over the five-year period to 30 June 2020, there were four major accidents recorded at this intersection, with one of those accidents resulting in serious injuries. As well as the recorded accidents, there have been numerous near misses at the intersection.
