Pedestrian crossing improvements - Bacchus Marsh, Barwon Heads and Highton

Raised pedestrian crossings have been constructed in Bacchus Marsh, Barwon Heads and Highton to make high foot traffic areas safer for all road users.

Project status:

Complete

We’ve installed raised crossings to improve pedestrian safety on Main Street in Bacchus Marsh, at the intersection of Barwon Heads Road and Sheepwash Road in Barwon Heads, and at the intersection of Roslyn Road and South Valley Road in Highton.

These projects were delivered under the Safe System Pedestrian Infrastructure Program, which identifies areas on our road network that pose a significant risk to pedestrian safety.

Update – May 2026

Bacchus Marsh

We’ve completed the construction of four raised pedestrian crossings on Main Street in Bacchus Marsh.

The new raised crossings will increase safety and  provide greater connectivity to pedestrian and cycling routes in Bacchus Marsh.

Barwon Heads

In Barwon Heads, we’ve completed the construction of two raised pedestrian crossings at the intersection of Barwon Heads Road, Sheepwash Road and Golf Links Road.

To ensure this busy intersection is safe for all road users, raised rossings have been installed on the northern (Sheepwash Road) and western (Barwon Heads Road) legs.

Resurfacing works on Barwon Heads Road, including the roundabout and a 500m section of road west of the intersection, was also completed during this project.

Highton

We’ve completed the construction of three raised pedestrian crossings at the intersection of Roslyn Road, South Valley Road and North Valley Road in Highton.

To reduce the risk of high-severity crashes at the intersection, raised crossings have been installed on the northern (North Valley Road), western (Roslyn Road) and southern (South Valley Road) legs. At both Barwon Heads and Highton, new footpaths to improve pedestrian connectivity have also be delivered, as well as upgraded signage, drainage and line marking to include bike lanes.

We thank you for your patience while we completed these important safety upgrades.

Benefits

To ensure these busy intersections are safe for all road users, the new raised crossings will:

  • reduce the risk of high-severity pedestrian and bike rider crashes by installing controlled crossing points on the intersection legs most popular with foot traffic,
  • provide better visibility and reduce the speed of approaching vehicles,
  • provide greater connectivity to pedestrian and cycling routes in Bacchus Marsh, and
  • improve pedestrian connectivity to amenities and transport links in Barwon Heads and Highton.
