Northern Trail improvements
We're improving sections of the Northern Trail path between Burgundy Street and Darebin Street in Heidelberg to make it more enjoyable for everyone.
Underway
Update - May 2026
Works on the path are expected to be completed in June 2026.
The path will be closed during works with signs in place to help guide you safely around the work area.
Please note all dates and times are subject to change due to weather conditions.
What we're doing
To make the Northern Trail path more enjoyable for everyone, we will:
- replace existing and add new rail fencing along the length of path to improve safety
- install handrails at steepest section of the path near Darebin Street to improve safety and accessibility
- widen and replace the steepest section of the path with concrete to improve access
- replace bench seats and remove graffiti along the rock walls to improve amenity.

Background
In addition to installing a shared use path along the Studley Road from Heidelberg Station to Burgundy Street and making safety improvements at Burgundy Street and Studley Road intersection, we’re making improvements to the path between Burgundy Street and Darebin Street to improve amenity for trail users.
Planning work showed that by keeping the path between Burgundy Street and Darebin Street the same width and restoring existing infrastructure, we’ll improve amenity while having less impact on the surrounding environment.
Projects nearby
We’re making other improvements in the area to improve pedestrian and bike rider safety. These include:
- a raised platform and kerb outstand on Livingstone Steet in Ivanhoe
- new mast arms to improve sight distance at the traffic lights on Upper Heidelberg Road in Ivanhoe
- a new raised platform at the existing pedestrian crossing with traffic lights on Lower Heidelberg Rd, east of Burton Crescent in Ivanhoe East
- a new raised platform at the existing signalised pedestrian crossing on Burke Road North in Ivanhoe East
- pavement marking improvements near the crossing on the Bell-Banksia Line/Studley Road slip lane in Eaglemont.
