Northern Highway - Epping - Kilmore Road (Wandong Road) roundabout Kilmore

We’re preparing for the construction of a dual-lane roundabout at the intersection of the Northern Highway and Epping-Kilmore Road (Wandong Road) near Kilmore.

Project status:

Underway

The dual-lane roundabout is specifically designed to meet the future needs of the intersection and the growing demand on the network in Mitchell Shire and surrounds.

Update - June 2026

Works are progressing on construction of the new roundabout and are expected to be complete by late 2026, weather permitting.

Epping-Kilmore Road (Wandong Road) Closure

To complete this project as efficiently and safely as possible a full closure of Epping-Kilmore Road (Wandong Road) at the intersection of the Northern Highway will be in place for two weeks from Monday 15 June to Monday 29 June 2026, weather permitting.

This closure is required so that our crews can complete construction works on a narrow section of road where there is not enough space to operate heavy machinery while allowing vehicles to move through the intersection.

During this closure, vehicles travelling between Wandong and Kilmore will be detoured via O’Grady’s Road and Kilmore East Road. Please plan ahead, follow detour signage and allow up to 5 minutes extra travel time.

Vehicles travelling on the Northern highway will be able to continue through the project site. Please follow direction and reduced speed limits.

Access to local properties on Epping-Kilmore Road (Wandong Road) will remain available during the road closure.

Larger heavy vehicles and Oversize Overmass (OSOM) vehicles operating under a permit should travel via the Hume Freeway and Northern Highway.

Vegetation removal and reuse

We have designed this project to minimise vegetation removal where possible. However, to accommodate the new roundabout some native and non-native trees and vegetation surrounding the intersection were removed during the early stages of works.

The salvaged timber from site has been donated to the Taungurung Land and Waters Council. The timber has now been reused to provide aquatic habitat in local lagoons (see image below) and will also be used to construct wicking beds to generate native seedlings for the area.

We  will also utilise local indigenous plant species to revegetate the area as part of the project landscaping.

Overview

The dual-lane roundabout will meet the future needs of the intersection, reduce the potential for congestion and provide improved safety for all road users.

Roundabouts are one of the safest types of intersections because they slow traffic to safe speeds and direct traffic flow in the one direction.

This new roundabout will improve safety at the intersection by:

  • improving traffic flow
  • providing safer turning opportunities
  • encouraging drivers to slow down
  • improving the visibility of the intersection and installing new lighting

We’ve also considered the increasing demand on the road network to accommodate oversize overmass (OSOM) vehicles.

This project is funded by the Victorian Government.
